South Carolina State at North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and critical turnovers, South Carolina State overcame a sluggish offensive start to rally past North Carolina A&T 22-16 on Saturday at Truist Stadium, defying pregame expectations in a contest where both teams struggled to find consistent offensive rhythm.

The Bulldogs, who improved to 3-3, were projected as underdogs by the betting markets but entered with a high probability to win according to advanced metrics. They validated that statistical confidence with a second-half surge, scoring 22 unanswered points after the Aggies had built an early lead.

North Carolina A&T, which fell to 1-5, controlled the first half but could not find the end zone, settling for three field goals from Andrew Brown. Brown connected from 43, 55, and 33 yards to give the Aggies a 9-0 lead at halftime. The Aggies’ offense, led by quarterback Kevin White of Newport News, Virginia, moved the ball at times but was repeatedly stymied by penalties and a stubborn South Carolina State defense that forced key mistakes.

The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. South Carolina State quarterback William Atkins IV of Parkton, Maryland, jump-started the Bulldogs’ offense, capping a drive with a 43-yard touchdown pass to Cyrus Eillison to cut the deficit to 9-7.

The floodgates opened in the fourth quarter. The Bulldogs’ defense produced a game-changing play when linebacker Jordan Franklin of Waynesboro, Georgia, sacked White, forcing a fumble that was recovered by the Bulldogs deep in Aggies territory. That set up a 1-yard touchdown run by Josh Shaw. Atkins IV then connected with Cyrus Eillison for a successful two-point conversion, pushing the lead to 15-9.

South Carolina State extended its lead minutes later when Atkins IV found Jordan Smith for a 23-yard touchdown pass, stretching the advantage to 22-9. Atkins IV finished the game with two touchdown passes and was a catalyst in the comeback.

North Carolina A&T mounted a late response, with White connecting with Thomas Brown of Wendell, North Carolina, on an 11-yard touchdown pass with just over three minutes remaining to pull within 22-16. White finished 17 of 34 for 194 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

The Aggies’ ensuing onside kick attempt failed, and the Bulldogs’ ground game, led by Mason Pickett-Hicks of Rock Hill, South Carolina, who rushed for 67 yards, effectively ran out the clock to secure the victory.

The South Carolina State defense was pivotal, intercepting White once and recovering two of his fumbles, including the critical fourth-quarter turnover that led directly to a score. The Aggies’ ground game found some success with Wesley Graves of Danville, Virginia, rushing for 66 yards, but it was not enough to overcome the offensive miscues.

The combined point total of 38 fell well below the pregame over/under line of 60.5, underscoring the defensive struggle that characterized much of the afternoon.

South Carolina State will look to build on the win when they travel to face Norfolk State on Oct. 25. North Carolina A&T will seek to end its losing streak the same day when it hosts Campbell.
