South Carolina State rallies to beat North Carolina A&T

GREENSBORO, N.C. (Interstat) — Defying pregame projections and a sluggish start, South Carolina State erupted for 22 unanswered points in the second half to stun North Carolina A&T 22-16 on Saturday at Truist Stadium.

The Bulldogs, who were installed as 9.5-point underdogs despite statistical models favoring them, improved to 3-3 on the season. The Aggies, meanwhile, saw their frustrating season continue, falling to 1-5 after a fourth-quarter rally fell short.

For nearly three quarters, the game was a defensive struggle defined by punts and field goals. North Carolina A&T’s offense, led by quarterback Kevin White of Newport News, Virginia, managed to move the ball but consistently stalled in South Carolina State territory. Kicker Andrew Brown of Lexington, North Carolina, provided all of the Aggies’ first-half scoring, connecting on field goals of 43, 55, and 33 yards to give the home team a 9-0 lead at halftime.

The Bulldogs’ offense, which utilized two quarterbacks in Ryan Stubblefield of Houston, Texas, and William Atkins IV of Parkton, Maryland, was stymied for the first 30 minutes. Their deepest first-half drive ended in a missed 47-yard field goal attempt by Nico Cavanillas Alti of Madrid, Spain, and Stubblefield was intercepted by Aggies linebacker Joshua Iseah of Charlotte, North Carolina.

The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. After the teams traded punts, South Carolina State’s offense finally found its rhythm with Atkins IV at the helm. The drive was sparked by a 22-yard scramble by Atkins IV, and two plays later, he connected with receiver Cyrus Eillison of Pamplico, South Carolina, on a deep 43-yard touchdown pass. The score cut the Aggies’ lead to 9-7 with 6:42 remaining in the third quarter.

The Bulldogs’ defense then took over, creating a pair of critical fourth-quarter turnovers. On the first play of the final period, South Carolina State linebacker Jordan Franklin of Waynesboro, Georgia, sacked White, forcing and recovering a fumble at the North Carolina A&T 9-yard line. Three plays later, Josh Shaw punched in a 1-yard touchdown run. Atkins IV then hit Eillison for a successful two-point conversion, giving the Bulldogs their first lead at 15-9.

On the ensuing Aggies possession, the Bulldogs’ defense struck again. White was stripped by the South Carolina State pass rush, and lineman Joshua Barker of Kennesaw, Georgia, fell on the loose ball. Just two plays later, Atkins IV found a wide-open Jordan Smith of Blythewood, South Carolina, for a 23-yard touchdown pass, extending the lead to 22-9.

North Carolina A&T mounted a late response. White engineered a 13-play, 80-yard drive, capping it with an 11-yard touchdown pass to Thomas Brown of Wendell, North Carolina, to pull within 22-16 with 3:05 left on the clock.

The Aggies’ hopes for a comeback were extinguished by the Bulldogs’ ground game. South Carolina State, led by running back Mason Pickett-Hicks of Rock Hill, South Carolina, who finished with 67 yards on 15 carries, successfully ran out the clock. The Bulldogs converted two critical first downs, the final one a 9-yard run by Pickett-Hicks, allowing them to take a knee and seal the victory.

White finished the game 17 of 34 for 194 yards with one touchdown and one interception, which was snagged by Franklin in the end zone to halt a late Aggies drive. His top target was Jamison Warren of Winston-Salem, North Carolina, who caught five passes for 57 yards. Wesley Graves of Danville, Virginia, provided a spark on the ground for the Aggies, rushing for 66 yards on 15 carries.

For South Carolina State, Atkins IV provided the necessary spark, completing 10 of 21 passes for 101 yards and two touchdowns while adding 23 yards on the ground. Eillison was his primary downfield threat, hauling in four catches for 54 yards and a score.

The game was a battle of field position for much of the afternoon, with South Carolina State punter Elliott Janish of Midwest City, Oklahoma, averaging 40.7 yards on six punts, often pinning the Aggies deep in their own territory.

South Carolina State will look to build on the momentum from this comeback victory when they travel to face Norfolk State on Oct. 25. North Carolina A&T will attempt to regroup and find its first win since September when it hosts Campbell on the same date.
