Brown at Bryant
OKLAHOMA CITY (Interstat) — James Murphy passed for 347 yards and a touchdown, and the Brown Bears erupted for 29 unanswered points in the second half to stun the Bryant Bulldogs 29-19 on Friday night at Taft Stadium.
The Bears, who improved to 3-1, were shut out in the first half and found themselves in a 19-point deficit before their offense came alive after halftime.
Bryant, which fell to 2-5, controlled the first half behind a dominant rushing performance from Elijah Elliott. The running back from Portland, Oregon, scored on a 14-yard run late in the first quarter and added a 1-yard plunge just before halftime to give the Bulldogs a 12-0 lead at the break. The home team extended its lead early in the third quarter when quarterback Jaden Keefner connected with Aldrich Doe on a 16-yard touchdown pass.
The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. Brown quarterback James Murphy, a 6-foot-4 junior from Reading, Massachusetts, found his rhythm, engineering a scoring drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Matt Childs. A successful two-point conversion pass from Will Currid to Levi Linowes cut the deficit to 19-8.
Brown’s defense then stiffened, forcing a punt and setting the stage for another scoring drive. Murphy led the Bears on a methodical possession that ended with Childs scoring his second touchdown of the game from a yard out, pulling Brown to within 19-15.
The Bears’ defense continued to apply pressure, and the offense sealed the victory in the fourth quarter. Running back Qwentin Brown broke free for a 26-yard touchdown run with just over four minutes remaining to give Brown its first lead of the game. The Bears added a final touchdown to complete the stunning comeback.
Murphy finished the game completing 29 of 44 pass attempts. His primary target was Trevor Foley, who hauled in a 47-yard touchdown reception. Matt Childs was a workhorse for the Bears, rushing 21 times for 92 yards and two touchdowns while also catching five passes for 33 yards.
For Bryant, Elliott was the standout, rushing for 116 yards and two touchdowns on 21 carries. Keefner passed for 162 yards and a touchdown but was intercepted once by Brown’s Elias Archie. Zyheem Collick was his top receiver with seven catches for 57 yards.
The loss extends a difficult stretch for Bryant, which has now lost three consecutive games. The victory gives Brown momentum heading into its Ivy League schedule.
Brown’s next game is at home against Princeton on Oct. 18. Bryant travels to face Rhode Island on Oct. 25.
