Central Connecticut Holds Off Robert Morris for Road Win
MOON TOWNSHIP, Pa. (Interstat) — A dominant first-half performance and a game-breaking defensive touchdown propelled Central Connecticut to a 24-12 victory over Robert Morris on Saturday at Joe Walton Stadium, a result that defied the pregame expectations that heavily favored the Colonials.
The Blue Devils, installed as 10-point underdogs, improved to 3-3 overall. Robert Morris fell to 1-4.
Central Connecticut seized control from the opening kickoff, scoring two first-quarter touchdowns to build a lead it would not relinquish. The Blue Devils’ opening drive was a methodical 80-yard march, capped by a 34-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Brady Olson to running back Donovan Wadley.
The early momentum swung further in Central Connecticut’s favor on Robert Morris’s ensuing possession. Colonials quarterback Cooper Panteck, a redshirt sophomore from Strongsville, Ohio, was intercepted by defensive back Jahvante Royal, giving the Blue Devils excellent field position. They capitalized swiftly, with running back Elijah Howard breaking free for a 29-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 14-0 before the first quarter had concluded.
Howard was the engine of the Central Connecticut offense, amassing 131 rushing yards and a touchdown on 16 carries. He also added four receptions for 22 yards. Olson, the redshirt sophomore from Bellingham, Massachusetts, managed the game effectively, completing 19 of 34 passes for 187 yards and a touchdown while adding 19 yards on the ground.
The Colonials’ offense, led by Panteck, struggled to find consistency against a stout Blue Devils defense. Panteck finished 16 of 30 for 223 yards but threw two critical interceptions. The second proved to be the most damaging. On the Colonials’ first possession of the second half, Panteck’s pass was picked off by linebacker Devon Anderson, who returned it 55 yards for a touchdown. The defensive score pushed Central Connecticut’s advantage to 21-0 and effectively put the game out of reach.
Robert Morris finally found the end zone in the fourth quarter after a quarterback change. Jake Wolfe, a redshirt freshman from Mckees Rocks, Pennsylvania, entered the game and orchestrated two scoring drives. He connected with receiver Chaz Middleton on a 6-yard touchdown pass and later handed off to Donta Whack for a 7-yard rushing score. Wolfe finished an efficient 9 of 12 for 133 yards and a touchdown.
Despite the late surge, the Colonials’ comeback bid fell short. Central Connecticut sealed the victory with a 35-yard field goal from kicker Jack Hennessey with 4:24 remaining in the game, pushing the lead to 24-12. The Blue Devils’ defense then held firm, preventing any further Robert Morris scoring.
Middleton was a bright spot for the Colonials in the loss, hauling in nine receptions for 186 yards and a touchdown. Whack contributed 40 rushing yards and a score.
The final score of 36 combined points fell well under the pregame over/under line of 42.5, and the result was a stark contrast to the Interstat game simulator, which had projected a narrow 34-32 victory for Central Connecticut. The Blue Devils’ ELO win probability was 58.30 percent.
Central Connecticut looks to build on the road victory when it travels to face Wagner next Saturday. Robert Morris will attempt to regroup on the road against Long Island University.
