Richmond at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game defined by defensive stands and a dramatic fourth-quarter swing, the Richmond Spiders escaped Andy Kerr Stadium with a 24-19 victory over the Colgate Raiders on Saturday, a result that defied both the betting lines and statistical projections.

The Spiders, who entered the game as a slight underdog, improved to 3-3 overall. Colgate fell to 2-3.

A methodical, run-heavy approach from Richmond in the first half was countered by a prolific but often stymied passing attack from Colgate. The Spiders struck first with a grinding 15-play, 75-yard drive that consumed nearly 13 minutes of the first quarter. Quarterback Ashten Snelsire of Berlin, Maryland, capped the marathon drive with a 1-yard touchdown run.

The second quarter saw both teams trade scores. Richmond extended its lead with a field goal, but Colgate responded with a 38-yard field goal from Luke Vogeler of Caledonia, Michigan, and a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jake Stearney to Brady Hutchison, cutting the Spiders’ lead to 10-9 at halftime. The Raiders squandered several first-half opportunities, including a drive that reached the Richmond 6-yard line just before halftime but resulted in no points.

After a scoreless third quarter dominated by punts and defensive stops, the game erupted in the final period. Colgate took its first lead of the day with a 20-yard Vogeler field goal, making the score 12-10.

The Spiders answered with breathtaking speed on the very next play from scrimmage. Snelsire connected with Andreas Hill of Alexandria, Virginia, on a deep post route, and the 6-foot-4 receiver did the rest, racing 75 yards for a touchdown to put Richmond back in front, 17-12.

Colgate’s offense, which had moved the ball between the 20-yard lines all afternoon, finally found the end zone again. Stearney engineered a 79-yard drive, culminating in an 8-yard touchdown pass to Reed Swanson of Glen Gardner, New Jersey, giving the Raiders a 19-17 lead after the failed two-point conversion.

The back-and-forth affair took its final decisive turn on special teams. After Richmond’s ensuing drive stalled, Colgate’s Tyler Fontenot of Falls Church, Virginia, punted the ball away. Richmond’s Ja’Vion Griffin of Williamston, North Carolina, fielded the kick and weaved through the Raiders’ coverage unit for an electrifying 87-yard punt return touchdown, reclaiming the lead for the Spiders at 24-19 with just over four minutes remaining.

Colgate had two final chances to mount a game-winning drive. The first ended when Richmond linebacker Peyton Seelmann of Mechanicsville, Virginia, intercepted a Stearney pass. After forcing a Richmond punt, the Raiders’ last-gasp effort ended with a sack by Camden Byrd as time expired.

Statistically, Colgate’s Jake Stearney of Chicago, Illinois, put up impressive numbers, completing 25 of 45 passes for 322 yards and two touchdowns. His primary target was Reed Swanson, who hauled in seven catches for 113 yards and a score. Brady Hutchison of Orange, Connecticut, added eight receptions for 71 yards and a touchdown.

For Richmond, Ashten Snelsire was efficient, completing 13 of 19 passes for 199 yards and a touchdown while adding 20 yards and a score on the ground. His connection with Andreas Hill was the team’s biggest offensive play; Hill’s two catches resulted in 105 yards and the crucial fourth-quarter touchdown. The Spiders’ ground game was a committee effort, with Aziz Foster-Powell of Richmond, Virginia, leading the way with 27 yards on 12 carries.

The loss overshadowed a strong defensive performance from Colgate, which held Richmond’s rushing attack to just 2.6 yards per carry. Richmond’s defense, however, made critical stops in the red zone and produced the game-sealing turnover.

The Spiders will host Holy Cross next Saturday, while Colgate travels to face Georgetown.
