Yale at Dartmouth

HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — In a stunning and chaotic fourth-quarter collapse, the Yale Bulldogs surrendered a 16-point lead as the Dartmouth Big Green scored 17 unanswered points in the final period to snatch a 17-16 victory on Saturday at Memorial Field.

The Bulldogs, who had dominated the first three quarters, appeared poised for a comfortable Ivy League road win before the game spectacularly unraveled in the final 15 minutes.

Yale’s offense was methodical for much of the contest, built on the powerful running of Josh Pitsenberger. The senior from Bethesda, Maryland, was the workhorse for the Bulldogs, carrying the ball 34 times for 138 yards and adding four receptions for 45 yards. His consistent gains set the tone and chewed up the clock, keeping Dartmouth’s offense on the sideline.

The Bulldogs broke through in the second quarter with a 41-yard field goal from Nick Conforti. They extended their lead in the third quarter when quarterback Dante Reno connected with Nico Brown on a 6-yard touchdown pass. The score was set up by a critical defensive play, as Yale’s Micaiah Shaber recovered a fumble forced by a sack from Ezekiel Larry.

Yale added to its lead early in the fourth quarter with another Conforti field goal, pushing the score to 16-0 and seemingly putting the game out of reach.

However, the momentum shifted irrevocably in Dartmouth’s favor. Big Green quarterback Grayson Saunier, who had been contained for three quarters, erupted in the final period. The Lafayette, Louisiana, native engineered a dramatic comeback, first capping a drive with a 6-yard touchdown run.

Later in the quarter, after a Yale interception by Dartmouth defensive back Sean Williams, Saunier broke free for a breathtaking 37-yard touchdown scramble, pulling the Big Green to within two points. Saunier finished the game with 158 yards passing and two touchdowns through the air, but it was his 95 rushing yards on 14 carries, including the two critical scores, that fueled the rally.

Yale had a chance to seal the game on its ensuing possession, driving deep into Dartmouth territory. Reno, who completed 19 of 32 passes for 196 yards and two touchdowns, found Graham Smith for a 4-yard touchdown pass with just 37 seconds remaining. But the Bulldogs, needing a two-point conversion to extend their lead to a full field goal, failed to convert, leaving the score at 16-14.

That left the door open for Dartmouth. Saunier quickly moved the Big Green into field goal range, completing passes to Ky’Dric Fisher and Chris Corbo to set up a 51-yard attempt for kicker Owen Zalc as time expired. Zalc, who had missed two field goals earlier in the game, drilled the kick straight through the uprights, setting off a celebration on the Dartmouth sideline and stunning the visitors.

The loss negated a stellar performance from Yale’s Nico Brown, who caught eight passes for 113 yards and a touchdown.

With the win, Dartmouth improves to 2-1 overall. Yale falls to 2-1. Both teams are now 0-1 in Ivy League play. Yale will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Stonehill. Dartmouth travels to face Fordham next Saturday.
