Dartmouth Rallies with 17-Point Fourth Quarter to Stun Yale
HANOVER, N.H. (Interstat) — In a stunning and chaotic reversal of fortune, the Dartmouth Big Green scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to snatch a 17-16 victory from the Yale Bulldogs on a 51-yard field goal by Owen Zalc as time expired Saturday at Memorial Field.
For three quarters, the game was a story of Yale’s grinding dominance and Dartmouth’s offensive futility. The Bulldogs, led by a relentless ground attack from Josh Pitsenberger, controlled the clock and the field position, while the Big Green offense sputtered, squandering multiple red zone opportunities with missed field goals and a critical turnover.
Yale built its lead methodically. Kicker Nick Conforti connected on a 41-yard field goal in the second quarter for the only points of the first half. The Bulldogs extended their lead in the third quarter when quarterback Dante Reno hit star receiver Nico Brown on a 6-yard touchdown pass. The score was set up by a fumble recovery from Yale defensive lineman Micaiah Shaber, who pounced on a ball stripped from Dartmouth quarterback Grayson Saunier.
Entering the final period, Yale held a commanding 16-0 lead and appeared to be in complete control. The landscape of the game, and the season for both teams, was about to be irrevocably altered.
The comeback began with Dartmouth finally solving the Yale defense. Saunier, who had been contained for much of the game, engineered a 10-play, 75-yard drive, capping it with a 6-yard touchdown run to cut the deficit to 16-7 with 10:24 remaining.
On the ensuing Yale possession, the momentum swung violently. Reno, under pressure, threw an interception directly to Dartmouth defensive back Sean Williams, giving the Big Green the ball back with ample time. Dartmouth’s offense, now operating with newfound confidence, needed only a few plays to strike again. Saunier broke free for a spectacular 37-yard touchdown run, slicing through the Yale defense to bring the Big Green within two points at 16-14 with just over four minutes left.
Yale’s offense, which had relied so heavily on Pitsenberger, attempted to mount a clock-killing drive to seal the game. They moved the ball effectively, with Reno connecting on key passes to Jaxton Santiago and Aidan Stephens to drive deep into Dartmouth territory. Facing a critical fourth down inside the 10-yard line, Reno found tight end Graham Smith for a 4-yard touchdown pass with only 37 seconds left on the clock.
Crucially, the Bulldogs failed on the two-point conversion attempt, leaving their lead at just 16-14 and giving Dartmouth a lifeline with precious little time remaining.
What followed was a sequence of breathtaking execution and high drama. Starting at their own 25-yard line with no timeouts, Saunier and the Big Green offense went to work. Saunier completed quick passes to Chris Corbo and D.J. Crowther to move near midfield. With the clock ticking down, he found Ky’Dric Fisher for a 22-yard gain that put the ball at the Yale 33-yard line with seven seconds left.
After an incomplete pass to stop the clock with two seconds remaining, the game rested on the right foot of Owen Zalc, who had earlier missed from 31 and 56 yards. The kick from 51 yards sailed true through the uprights, setting off a wild celebration on the Dartmouth sideline and stunning silence from the Yale contingent.
The victory was a tale of two quarterbacks and two halves. Yale’s Dante Reno finished 19 of 32 for 196 yards with two touchdown passes, but his two fourth-quarter interceptions proved catastrophic. His favorite target was Nico Brown, who hauled in 8 passes for 113 yards and a touchdown. The workhorse for the Bulldogs was Josh Pitsenberger, who carried the ball 34 times for 138 bruising yards and added 4 receptions for 45 yards.
For Dartmouth, Grayson Saunier’s final stat line told the story of his resilient performance. He completed 15 of 22 passes for 158 yards, but his impact came equally with his legs, rushing for 95 yards and two critical touchdowns on 14 carries. His late-game heroics erased a performance that was for three quarters defined by frustration and missed opportunities. Grayson O’Bara was his top receiver with 5 catches for 69 yards.
The loss drops Yale to 2-1 on the season, while Dartmouth improves to 2-1. The Bulldogs will look to rebound next Saturday when they host Stonehill. Dartmouth will hit the road to face Fordham, also on Saturday. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which had given Dartmouth a 59.9 percent probability to win but had projected a final score of 22-16 in favor of the Big Green. Yale had been a 2.5-point favorite, and the total score of 33 points fell well under the over/under line of 52.5.
