Southern Illinois at North Dakota State
FARGO, N.D. (Interstat) — In a matchup of unbeaten Missouri Valley Football Conference heavyweights, North Dakota State showcased its championship pedigree, pulling away from Southern Illinois in the second half for a decisive 45-17 victory before a raucous crowd at the Fargodome on Saturday.
The Bison, extending the nation’s longest home winning streak, improved to 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the MVFC. The Salukis, suffering their first loss of the season, fell to 4-1 and 1-1.
The game was a tale of two halves. Southern Illinois, riding a potent ground game, controlled the clock early and held a 17-17 tie late in the second quarter. The Salukis opened the scoring with a 35-yard field goal from Paul Geelen on their first drive, a methodical 15-play, 62-yard march that consumed over seven minutes.
North Dakota State answered with breathtaking speed. On the Bison’s first offensive play from scrimmage, wide receiver Bryce Lance took an end-around 75 yards for a touchdown, tying the game.
Southern Illinois reclaimed the lead early in the second quarter when running back Chandler Chapman capped another long drive with a 5-yard touchdown run. The Bison responded with an Eli Ozick 38-yard field goal and then struck just before halftime. Quarterback Cole Payton connected with Lance on a 48-yard pass to set up a 9-yard touchdown toss to the same receiver with 23 seconds left, sending the teams into the locker room tied.
The second half belonged entirely to North Dakota State. The Bison defense stiffened, and their multifaceted offense found its rhythm. Payton, the Omaha, Nebraska, native, was the catalyst, finishing an efficient 13 of 16 for 243 yards and two touchdowns through the air while adding 48 yards and two more scores on the ground.
His 2-yard touchdown run capped the opening drive of the third quarter, giving NDSU its first lead. He then broke the game open with a 41-yard touchdown scramble later in the period, extending the lead to 31-17.
The Bison poured it on in the fourth quarter. Running back Barika Kpeenu, a Fargo product, plunged in from 6 yards out, and DJ Scott added a 24-yard touchdown run to put the game out of reach. Kpeenu finished with 66 yards on 16 carries.
Southern Illinois quarterback DJ Williams provided a bright spot for the Salukis, accounting for 231 total yards and a late rushing touchdown. He completed 15 of 29 passes for 190 yards and added 41 yards on the ground. His favorite targets were Fabian McCray and Jay Jones, who each had four catches for 52 yards.
The Salukis’ offense, however, was hampered by mistakes and a stifling Bison pass rush in the second half. A critical interception by NDSU linebacker Oliver Lucht in the fourth quarter halted any hopes of a comeback.
The final score defied the pregame betting line, which had installed Southern Illinois as a 21-point underdog, and the total score of 62 went under the over/under line of 58.5. The result was largely in line with projections from Interstat, which gave the Bison a 97.3 percent probability to win.
North Dakota State travels to face Indiana State next Saturday, while Southern Illinois returns home to host North Dakota.
