North Dakota State Routs Southern Illinois to Stay Undefeated
FARGO, N.D. (Interstat) — In a showcase of offensive firepower and defensive dominance, the North Dakota State Bison reaffirmed their status as a national powerhouse with a commanding 45-17 victory over the previously unbeaten Southern Illinois Salukis on Saturday at the Fargodome.
The highly anticipated matchup between two of the Football Championship Subdivision’s top teams quickly turned into a one-sided affair after halftime, as the Bison, now 5-0, scored 28 unanswered points to pull away from the Salukis, who fell to 4-1.
Southern Illinois struck first with a methodical opening drive, culminating in a 35-yard field goal from Paul Geelen. The Salukis then extended their lead early in the second quarter when running back Chandler Chapman plunged into the end zone from 5 yards out, capping a 19-play, 80-yard drive that consumed over eight minutes of clock.
However, North Dakota State’s explosive offense needed just one play to answer the Salukis’ initial score. On the Bison’s first offensive snap, wide receiver Bryce Lance took an end-around 75 yards for a touchdown, instantly shifting the momentum.
The Bison then tied the game just before halftime in dramatic fashion. Quarterback Cole Payton engineered a rapid 71-yard drive in the final 45 seconds, connecting with Lance on a 9-yard touchdown pass with 23 seconds left to send the teams into the locker room knotted at 17.
The second half belonged entirely to North Dakota State. The Bison took their first lead of the game on their opening possession of the third quarter, with Payton scoring on a 2-yard run. He then broke the game open later in the quarter, ripping off a 41-yard touchdown run to extend the lead to 31-17.
Payton, a junior from Omaha, Nebraska, was the catalyst for the Bison offense. He was highly efficient through the air, completing 13 of 16 passes for 243 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading the team in rushing with 48 yards on eight carries, including two scores on the ground.
The Bison ground game was a multifaceted weapon. Barika Kpeenu, a Fargo native, provided the steady work, carrying the ball 16 times for 66 yards and a fourth-quarter touchdown. DJ Scott added a 24-yard touchdown run in the final period, part of a 14-point fourth quarter for the Bison that put the game out of reach.
Lance was Payton’s primary target, hauling in four passes for 79 yards and a touchdown to go with his game-breaking rushing score. Tight end Reis Kessel provided a massive spark with a 50-yard reception that set up an early second-half touchdown.
Southern Illinois’ offense, which had been prolific through its first four games, was stifled after the first quarter. Quarterback DJ Williams from Harvey, Illinois, fought hard, completing 15 of 29 passes for 190 yards and rushing for 41 yards and a late, inconsequential touchdown. But the Salukis’ attack became one-dimensional, and three costly sacks, a fumble, and a critical interception by Bison linebacker Oliver Lucht in the fourth quarter halted any chance of a comeback.
The loss is the first of the season for Southern Illinois, which had averaged over 43 points per game in its first four contests. The Salukis will look to rebound next Saturday when they host North Dakota.
North Dakota State, which was projected as a 21-point favorite by oddsmakers and had a 97 percent probability to win according to Interstat’s ELO system, continues its march through the Missouri Valley Football Conference schedule. The final combined score of 62 points fell under the betting over/under line of 58.5. The Bison travel to face Indiana State next Saturday.
