Illinois State Routs Murray State Behind Rittenhouse’s 4 Touchdowns

MURRAY, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections and featured an offensive explosion, the Illinois State Redbirds built a commanding early lead and held off a persistent Murray State Racers squad for a 46-32 victory on Saturday at Roy Stewart Stadium.

The contest, which saw a combined 78 points, sailed over the point spread where Murray State was a 24.5-point favorite and dramatically eclipsed the over/under line of 58.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a narrow 37-36 win for Illinois State, but the Redbirds’ offense had other ideas from the opening kickoff.

Illinois State quarterback Tommy Rittenhouse was nearly flawless, orchestrating an attack that scored on its first three possessions. The junior from Geneva, Illinois, completed 21 of 25 passes for 338 yards and four touchdowns, carving up the Racers’ defense with precision.

The Redbirds struck with stunning speed, putting 21 points on the board in the first quarter. The opening drive set the tone, a methodical 11-play, 61-yard march capped by a 2-yard touchdown run by wide receiver Daniel Sobkowicz. After forcing a Murray State punt, Rittenhouse needed just five plays to find Dylan Lord for a 4-yard scoring strike, making it 14-0.

Murray State responded with a promising drive, moving from their own 21 to the Illinois State 23, but the possession stalled, forcing a 41-yard field goal from Jack Tannehill to get the Racers on the board.

Any momentum was immediately extinguished on the ensuing kickoff, as Illinois State’s Wenkers Wright fielded the ball and exploded for an 80-yard return to the Murray State 12. On the next play, Victor Dawson powered in for a 12-yard touchdown run, stretching the lead to 21-3 as the first quarter concluded.

The second quarter saw the offenses continue to trade blows. Rittenhouse connected with Seth Glatz on a 52-yard touchdown pass, showcasing the big-play ability of the Redbirds’ attack. But Murray State, refusing to fold, answered with a 14-point quarter of their own.

Racers’ quarterback Jim Ogle, a Jacksonville, Alabama native, engineered a 15-play, 77-yard drive that consumed over six minutes, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown run by Jordan Washington. After forcing an Illinois State punt, Ogle led another scoring drive just before halftime, this time finishing it himself with a 1-yard plunge to cut the deficit to 31-17.

Illinois State managed to add a 37-yard field goal from Matt Maldonado as time expired in the half, taking a 34-17 lead into the break.

The Redbirds picked up where they left off to start the second half, with Rittenhouse leading a 75-yard drive that ended with a 19-yard touchdown pass to tight end Javon Charles.

Murray State continued its resilient effort, with Ogle leading a 10-play, 81-yard answering drive. The quarterback again finished it with his legs, scrambling for a 4-yard touchdown to make the score 41-24.

Illinois State’s offense, however, proved too potent. Rittenhouse found his favorite target, Daniel Sobkowicz, for a 24-yard touchdown pass later in the third quarter. Sobkowicz, from Arlington Heights, Illinois, was spectacular, hauling in eight receptions for 162 yards and two total touchdowns.

The Racers added a late score early in the fourth quarter, with Ogle connecting with Jawaun Northington on a 5-yard touchdown pass. A successful two-point conversion brought Murray State within two possessions at 44-32. Northington was a workhorse for the Racers, rushing 15 times for 71 yards.

Illinois State sealed the game with a time-consuming fourth-quarter drive that resulted in a 26-yard Maldonado field goal, providing the final margin. Murray State’s last-gasp effort ended when Ogle was intercepted by Doreon Dubose with 2:26 remaining, effectively ending the contest.

While Ogle put up strong numbers for Murray State, completing 23 of 39 passes for 283 yards and a touchdown while adding 39 yards and two scores on the ground, it wasn’t enough to overcome the early deficit. Lucas Desjardins was his primary target, catching eight passes for 95 yards.

The Illinois State ground game was balanced and effective, with Wenkers Wright rushing 15 times for 60 yards and Victor Dawson adding 71 yards on 10 carries, including his first-quarter touchdown.

The win improves Illinois State’s record to 3-2 on the season, providing a bounce-back victory after a loss to North Dakota State the previous week. Murray State falls to 0-5, still in search of its first win. The Racers will host South Dakota State next Saturday, while the Redbirds return home to face Youngstown State.
