Jackson State Rallies to Edge Alabama State in High-Scoring Affair
JACKSON, Miss. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth Southwestern Athletic Conference shootout that defied pregame projections, Jackson State quarterback JaCobian Morgan engineered a dramatic fourth-quarter comeback, throwing a go-ahead 18-yard touchdown pass to Nate Rembert with 50 seconds remaining to lift the Tigers to a 38-34 victory over Alabama State on Saturday afternoon at Mississippi Veterans Memorial Stadium.
The game, a pivotal conference clash between two teams that entered with identical 4-1 records, was a tale of two brilliant but contrasting quarterback performances. Jackson State’s Morgan, a native of Canton, Mississippi, was ruthlessly efficient, completing 16 of 23 passes for 187 yards and a career-high four touchdowns while adding 66 rushing yards on seven carries.
His counterpart, Alabama State’s dynamic Andrew Body of Corpus Christi, Texas, was a one-man offensive wrecking crew, amassing 442 total yards. Body threw for 349 yards and a touchdown on 20-of-30 passing and was even more dangerous on the ground, galloping for 93 yards on 14 carries. Despite Body’s heroic efforts, a critical interception early in the fourth quarter and a final, frantic drive that stalled at the Jackson State 1-yard line as time expired sealed the Hornets’ fate.
The contest unfolded in a manner few anticipated. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a 36-24 Jackson State win, with their ELO system giving the Tigers an 87.4 percent probability of victory. Alabama State had even been installed as an 8-point underdog. Instead, the two teams combined for 72 points, easily soaring over the over/under line of 54.5 in a contest that was never secure for either side.
Jackson State drew first blood on its opening drive, with Morgan capping a methodical 80-yard march with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Shemar Savage. The Hornets responded not with a touchdown, but with a pair of second-quarter field goals from Andrew Abu-Akel, from 42 and 36 yards, to close the gap to 7-6.
The Tigers answered with a 29-yard Donovan Warren field goal, but Alabama State then found its offensive rhythm. Body connected with Dylan Djete on a 41-yard strike to set up a 2-yard Marcus Harris II touchdown run, giving the Hornets their first lead at 13-10. The advantage was short-lived. Morgan needed just over a minute to drive Jackson State down the field, hitting Ja’Naylon Dupree on a 30-yard scoring pass to reclaim a 17-13 lead with 1:23 left in the half. Body, however, engineered a quick drive to set up Abu-Akel’s second field goal as the half expired, sending the teams to the locker room with Jackson State holding a narrow 17-16 edge.
Alabama State carried that momentum into the third quarter, embarking on a 75-yard drive that Jamarie Hostzclaw finished with a 2-yard touchdown run, putting the Hornets back in front 24-17. The Tigers, unfazed, responded with another methodical Morgan-led drive, which he capped with a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Jency Riley, knotting the score at 24-24.
The final quarter was a whirlwind of scoring and momentum swings. Jackson State seized the lead when Morgan found Dupree for his second touchdown, a 5-yard connection, to make it 31-24. Body and the Hornets roared back, with Body hitting Jalen Jones for an 8-yard touchdown to tie the game at 31-31.
On the ensuing possession, Jackson State appeared to stall, but a fumble by receiver Jameel Gardner Jr. was recovered by Alabama State’s Zaquan Patterson, giving the Hornets prime field position. Hostzclaw, who finished with 53 rushing yards and two touchdowns on the ground along with 14 receiving yards, broke free for a 15-yard score, putting Alabama State ahead 34-31 with 4:36 left.
With the clock winding down, Morgan engineered the game-winning drive. Mixing runs from Travis Terrell Jr., who had 77 yards on 17 carries, with precise passes, Morgan moved the Tigers into scoring position. Facing a critical down, he found Rembert in the end zone for the 18-yard score, sending the home crowd into a frenzy.
Alabama State had one last chance, and Body nearly pulled off a miracle. Starting from his own 29 with 44 seconds left and no timeouts, Body completed passes of 13, 24, 12, and 20 yards to drive the Hornets to the Jackson State 2-yard line. With one second left, Body fired a pass to Hostzclaw, who was tackled at the 1-yard line as the clock hit zero, securing the dramatic victory for Jackson State.
The loss drops Alabama State to 4-2 on the season, while Jackson State improves to 5-1. Both teams now look ahead to crucial conference road games on Oct. 25, with Alabama State traveling to face Alabama A&M and Jackson State heading to Grambling.
