Sacramento State Routs Weber State in High-Scoring Affair

SOUTH OGDEN, Utah (Interstat) — In a stunning reversal of expectations, the Sacramento State Hornets delivered an offensive explosion to dominate the Weber State Wildcats 55 to 27 on Saturday at Stewart Stadium. The Hornets, who entered the game as significant underdogs, amassed a staggering 553 yards of total offense, with 500 of those yards coming on the ground, to level both teams’ season records at 2-3.

The result defied pregame projections, as Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a Weber State victory with a final score of 42-38. The Wildcats were installed as 9.5-point favorites and held a 74 percent probability to win according to the same service’s ELO system. The combined score of 82 points sailed far over the over/under line of 57.5.

Sacramento State set the tone early with a methodical 10-play, 75-yard drive that consumed nearly six minutes of the first quarter. The drive was capped by a 10-yard touchdown run by quarterback Cardell Williams, giving the Hornets a 7-0 lead. Weber State responded with a 52-yard field goal from Sloan Calder to cut the deficit to 7-3, which held until the end of the opening period.

The second quarter belonged entirely to the Hornets, who unleashed a 21-point barrage to seize control of the game. The onslaught began just 14 seconds into the quarter when Rodney Hammond Jr. broke free for a 14-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 14-3.

After forcing a quick three-and-out from the Wildcats, Sacramento State needed only five plays to find the end zone again. The drive was punctuated by a breathtaking 51-yard touchdown scramble by Williams, his second rushing score of the half, pushing the advantage to 21-3.

Weber State showed a brief sign of life with a 13-play, 75-yard drive that ate over five minutes off the clock. Wildcats quarterback Dijon Jennings finished the drive with a 5-yard touchdown run, narrowing the gap to 21-10.

The Hornets, however, had a final answer before halftime. They engineered a 10-play, 82-yard drive in just over two minutes, with Jaquail Smith pounding it in from 13 yards out with 50 seconds remaining. The score sent Sacramento State into the locker room with a commanding 28-10 lead.

Any hopes of a Weber State comeback were extinguished on the opening drive of the second half. Sacramento State marched 55 yards in just five plays, with Hammond Jr. scoring his second touchdown of the day on an 8-yard run, making it 35-10.

The teams then traded scores through the third and early fourth quarters. Weber State’s Calder connected on a 48-yard field goal, and Jennings later found Chauncey Sylvester on a 23-yard touchdown pass. Sacramento State answered with a 3-yard touchdown run from Williams, his third of the game, to maintain a 42-20 lead.

Weber State’s Sylvester scored again on a 5-yard run with 8:36 remaining, pulling the Wildcats to within 42-27. The flicker of hope was immediately snuffed out by Hammond Jr., who fielded the ensuing kickoff and returned it 99 yards for a touchdown, a devastating blow that pushed the Hornets’ lead to 48-27.

Sacramento State put the final exclamation point on the victory with 2:46 left, as Smith broke loose for a 24-yard touchdown run, his second of the contest, to produce the final margin of 55-27.

The Hornet offense was a model of efficiency and explosiveness. Quarterback Cardell Williams, a Houston native, was a dual threat, completing 5 of 9 passes for 53 yards while rushing for 139 yards and three touchdowns on just 12 carries. His backfield partners were equally dominant. Jaquail Smith from Orlando, Florida, rushed for 135 yards and two touchdowns on 17 attempts. Rodney Hammond Jr. of Norfolk, Virginia, was a force in all phases, rushing for 106 yards and two touchdowns, catching a 25-yard pass, and amassing 131 return yards, including the pivotal 99-yard kickoff return for a score.

For Weber State, quarterback Dijon Jennings of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, completed 16 of 28 passes for 157 yards with one touchdown and one interception, adding 5 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Running back Chauncey Sylvester from Long Beach, California, was a bright spot, rushing for 83 yards and a touchdown while catching four passes for 54 yards and another score.

The loss sends Weber State into a challenging road contest next Saturday at Portland State. Sacramento State returns home to host Northern Colorado, looking to build on the momentum of this decisive victory.
