Northern Colorado stuns Idaho in high-scoring road victory

MOSCOW, Idaho (Interstat) — In a stunning upset that defied all statistical projections, the Northern Colorado Bears erupted for 35 first-half points and held off a second-half surge from the Idaho Vandals to secure a 49-33 victory on Saturday at the Kibbie Dome.

The Bears, who entered the game as 19-point underdogs and were given less than a one percent chance to win by one national analytics system, improved their season record to 2-3. Idaho also moved to 2-3.

Northern Colorado quarterback Eric Gibson Jr. was the catalyst for the offensive explosion, dissecting the Idaho secondary with precision. The junior from Norfolk, Virginia, completed 22 of 34 passes for 350 yards and two touchdowns, adding 15 rushing yards on three carries. His primary target was a dynamic duo of receivers: Carver Cheeks, who hauled in nine catches for 120 yards and a touchdown while adding a 13-yard rushing score, and Brayden Munroe, who amassed 151 yards on five receptions, including a 22-yard touchdown.

The Bears set the tone immediately, marching 75 yards on the game’s opening drive, which was capped by a 1-yard touchdown run from Mathias Price. The momentum swung further in Northern Colorado’s favor on Idaho’s first offensive play, as Darrell Bryant Jr. intercepted Vandals quarterback Jack Wagner, leading to a 52-yard Jacob Willig field goal and a 10-0 lead.

Idaho responded with a drive of its own, culminating in a 39-yard touchdown pass from Wagner to Elisha Cummings to cut the deficit to 10-7. But the Bears answered with another Willig field goal, this time from 43 yards, to end the first quarter leading 13-7.

The second quarter belonged entirely to Northern Colorado. Gibson engineered another scoring drive, finding Price on a 7-yard touchdown pass. After Idaho running back Rocco Koch answered with a 12-yard touchdown run to make it 20-14, the Bears’ offense continued its relentless pace. Gibson connected with Munroe for a 22-yard touchdown strike. Following an Owen Adams 38-yard field goal for Idaho, the Bears struck once more before halftime, with Kieryus Boone plunging in from 10 yards out to give Northern Colorado a commanding 35-17 lead at the break.

The Vandals, reeling from the first-half onslaught, regrouped in the third quarter. Their offense, which had sputtered at times, found a rhythm on the ground. Koch, who finished with 81 rushing yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries, broke free for a 16-yard score. A successful two-point conversion brought Idaho within 10 points at 35-25.

Idaho’s defense then forced a series of punts, but the Vandals’ offense could not capitalize fully, managing only a 10-yard touchdown run from Nate Thomas in the fourth quarter, followed by another two-point conversion, to close the gap to 35-33.

Facing a resurgent Idaho team and a raucous Kibbie Dome crowd, the Bears needed a response. They got one on the ensuing drive. After a 34-yard completion from Gibson to Munroe moved the ball into Idaho territory, Brandon Johnson sealed the game with an 18-yard touchdown run, extending the lead to 42-33 with 4:32 remaining.

Northern Colorado’s defense, which had bent throughout the second half, finally broke the Vandals’ spirit. With just over two minutes remaining, Cam Chapa intercepted a Wagner pass to effectively end the threat. The Bears then put the final exclamation point on the victory, with Johnson’s touchdown providing the final margin.

For Idaho, Wagner finished 21 of 33 for 237 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions. Cummings was a versatile weapon, rushing for 40 yards and catching five passes for 67 yards and a score. Nate Thomas added 64 rushing yards and a touchdown.

The Bears will look to build on this momentum when they travel to face Sacramento State on Oct. 18. Idaho will seek to rebound on the road at Eastern Washington the same day.
