Idaho State at Montana State

BOZEMAN, Mont. (Interstat) — Justin Lamson accounted for four touchdowns and Adam Jones rushed for 173 yards and a score to power Montana State to a 48-14 victory over Idaho State on Saturday at Bobcat Stadium.

The Bobcats, now 4-2 overall, exploded for 34 points in the first half to pull away from the Bengals and secure their third consecutive win.

Lamson, a quarterback from El Dorado Hills, California, was efficient and dynamic, completing 17 of 21 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns while adding 60 yards and another score on the ground. His favorite target was tight end Rocky Lencioni, a local product from Bozeman, who hauled in two touchdown receptions.

Montana State’s offense was balanced and relentless, amassing significant yardage both through the air and on the ground. Jones was the workhorse in the backfield, averaging over 10 yards per carry on his way to 173 rushing yards, including a 24-yard touchdown run in the second quarter.

The Bobcats’ defense also played a pivotal role, intercepting Idaho State quarterbacks twice. Defensive back Tayden Gray and linebacker Brock Steel each came away with a pick, with Gray’s coming in the end zone to close the first half and snuff out a potential Bengals scoring drive.

Idaho State, which fell to 2-4, kept the game close early. The Bengals traded scores with the Bobcats in a first quarter that ended tied at 14.

Jordan Cooke led the Idaho State offense, throwing for 307 yards and two touchdowns on 20-of-37 passing. His primary weapons were receivers Tsion Nunnally and Michael Shulikov. Nunnally caught nine passes for 169 yards and a spectacular 69-yard touchdown, while Shulikov had 10 receptions for 124 yards and a score.

The game turned decisively in the second quarter as Montana State scored 20 unanswered points. After Jones’ 24-yard touchdown run gave the Bobcats a 20-14 lead, Lamson capped a long drive with a 7-yard rushing touchdown. He then connected with Lencioni on a 13-yard scoring pass with 25 seconds left in the half to extend the lead to 34-14.

Idaho State threatened to answer just before halftime, but Gray’s interception in the end zone preserved the 20-point advantage.

The second half saw Montana State continue to control the game. Lamson found Lencioni for their second touchdown connection, a 22-yard strike in the third quarter. Backup quarterback Patrick Duchien, from Florence, Montana, added the final exclamation point with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter to seal the 48-14 final.

The Bobcats’ victory surpassed the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had forecast a 42-27 Montana State win. The combined score of 62 points fell under the betting over/under line of 58.5.

Montana State looks to continue its winning streak on the road next Saturday at Cal Poly. Idaho State returns home to host Northern Arizona on Oct. 25.
