Montana State Routs Idaho State Behind Lamson’s 4 Touchdowns

BOZEMAN, Mont. (Interstat) — In a commanding display of offensive firepower and defensive control, the Montana State Bobcats overwhelmed the Idaho State Bengals 48 to 14 on Saturday afternoon before a homecoming crowd at Bobcat Stadium.

The victory, fueled by a dynamic two-quarterback system and a relentless rushing attack, improved Montana State’s record to 4-2 overall. Idaho State, unable to sustain momentum after a competitive first quarter, fell to 2-4.

The game began with an offensive explosion from both sides. Montana State quarterback Justin Lamson, a native of El Dorado Hills, California, orchestrated a swift opening drive, culminating in a 22-yard touchdown pass to running back Julius Davis. The Bobcats answered an early Idaho State score with another Lamson touchdown pass, this time a 15-yard connection with Dane Steel, to tie the game at 14 late in the first quarter.

Idaho State’s offense found success through the air, as quarterback Jordan Cooke connected with receiver Michael Shulikov on a 7-yard touchdown pass to cap a long drive. Cooke finished the day with 307 yards and two touchdowns through the air, with his primary targets being Tsion Nunnally, who had 169 receiving yards, and Shulikov, who added 124.

The second quarter, however, belonged entirely to the Bobcats, who seized control of the game with 20 unanswered points. The turning point came on a 24-yard touchdown run by Adam Jones, who gashed the Bengals’ defense throughout the afternoon. Jones amassed 173 rushing yards on just 16 carries.

Montana State extended its lead when Lamson called his own number for a 7-yard rushing touchdown. Just before halftime, Lamson delivered a decisive blow, finding tight end Rocky Lencioni for a 13-yard scoring strike to give the Bobcats a 34-14 advantage. The half ended with Idaho State’s Cooke throwing an interception to defensive back Tayden Gray, halting a potential scoring drive.

Lamson was exceptionally efficient, completing 17 of 21 passes for 184 yards and four touchdowns while adding 60 rushing yards and another score on the ground.

The Bobcats’ defense tightened its grip in the second half, stifling Idaho State’s attempts to mount a comeback. The Bengals’ best opportunity came on their opening drive of the third quarter, which stalled at the Montana State 19-yard line and ended with a missed 36-yard field goal by Trajan Sinatra.

Montana State capitalized on the missed opportunity, marching down the field with Lamson hitting Lencioni for their second touchdown connection of the day, this one from 22 yards out, to extend the lead to 41-14.

With the game in hand, Montana State turned to its backup quarterback, Patrick Duchien of Florence, Montana, who put an exclamation point on the victory with a 4-yard touchdown run in the fourth quarter. Duchien added 46 rushing yards on just four carries.

Defensively, the Bobcats were led by linebackers Brock Steel, who recorded an interception, and Cole Taylor, who recovered a key fumble in the third quarter to snuff out an Idaho State drive.

The lopsided result defied the pregame spread, which had Idaho State as a 22-point underdog, and the combined score of 62 fell under the projected over/under line of 58.5. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a closer contest, forecasting a 42-27 Montana State win, while its ELO system gave the Bobcats a 99.1 percent probability of victory.

Idaho State will look to regroup during its bye week before hosting Northern Arizona on Oct. 25. Montana State, riding a three-game winning streak, hits the road to face Cal Poly on the same date.
