James Madison Rallies Past Louisiana for Sun Belt Victory

HARRISONBURG, Va. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dominant second-half performance, the James Madison Dukes overcame a sluggish start to defeat the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns 24-14 on Saturday at a rain-soaked Bridgeforth Stadium.

The Dukes, now 4-1 on the season, were held scoreless in the opening quarter and trailed at halftime before their offense and a stifling defense took control after the break. The loss drops Louisiana to 2-3.

James Madison quarterback Alonza Barnett III orchestrated the comeback, finishing the day with 290 yards passing and three touchdowns, all of which were caught by wide receiver Landon Ellis. Ellis was Barnett’s primary target, hauling in six receptions for 120 yards, including a 62-yard scoring strike early in the third quarter that tied the game.

The first half belonged largely to Louisiana. After a scoreless first quarter filled with punts and a key fumble recovery by the Ragin’ Cajuns’ Brent Gordon Jr., Louisiana’s offense found its rhythm in the second period.

Quarterback Lunch Winfield connected with tight end Brock Chappell on a 5-yard touchdown pass to open the scoring. Later in the quarter, Winfield unleashed a 69-yard touchdown pass to Dale Martin, showcasing the big-play potential of the Ragin’ Cajuns’ attack. That score gave Louisiana a 14-0 lead.

James Madison finally got on the board with just under five minutes remaining in the half. Barnett III capped a drive highlighted by a 49-yard run from Wayne Knight by finding Ellis for a 4-yard touchdown, cutting the deficit to 14-7 at the intermission.

Any momentum Louisiana carried into the locker room was extinguished just 14 seconds into the second half. On the first play from scrimmage, Barnett III hit Ellis in stride for the 62-yard touchdown, instantly leveling the score and energizing the home crowd.

From that point forward, the James Madison defense took over. The unit consistently pressured Winfield, with Sahir West and Aiden Gobaira recording key sacks in the fourth quarter to stifle Louisiana drives. The Ragin’ Cajuns’ offense, which had been productive in the second quarter, was held to just 64 total yards in the entire second half and failed to cross midfield on six of their seven possessions after halftime.

The Dukes’ ground game, led by Knight’s 111 yards on 20 carries, wore down the Louisiana defense and helped James Madison control the clock. Knight’s versatility was also on display, as he added five receptions for 23 yards.

James Madison seized the lead for good early in the fourth quarter. After a methodical drive deep into Louisiana territory, Barnett III once again found Ellis, this time for a 4-yard touchdown to put the Dukes ahead 21-14.

The James Madison defense then forced a critical three-and-out, and the offense proceeded to drain more than five minutes off the clock on a subsequent possession. That drive culminated in a 24-yard field goal from Morgan Suarez with just over three minutes remaining, extending the lead to 24-14 and effectively sealing the victory.

Louisiana’s final desperate drive to get back into the game ended when Winfield’s pass was intercepted by Jacob Thomas in the end zone with 1:30 left on the clock.

Winfield finished with 243 yards passing and two touchdowns for Louisiana, with Robert Williams being his top receiver, catching five passes for 134 yards. However, the Ragin’ Cajuns’ offense could not sustain its success against a relentless James Madison pass rush and secondary.

Defensively, Louisiana was led by Jaden Dugger with 12 total tackles and Tyree Skipper with nine. For James Madison, Elijah Culp and Tyler Brown each recorded eight tackles, while the defensive front consistently disrupted Louisiana’s offensive rhythm.

The victory keeps James Madison near the top of the Sun Belt Conference standings as they prepare to host Old Dominion next Saturday. Louisiana will look to rebound at home against Southern Mississippi.
