Arizona State at Utah
SALT LAKE CITY (Interstat) — In a commanding display of power and precision, the Utah Utes dismantled the previously unbeaten Arizona State Sun Devils 42-10 before a crowd of 51,444 at Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday.
The Utes, led by a dynamic dual-threat performance from quarterback Devon Dampier, scored touchdowns on six of their first eight meaningful drives, turning a highly anticipated matchup between one-loss teams into a lopsided affair. The victory improved both teams’ records to 4-1.
Dampier, a Tucson, Arizona, native, was the catalyst for the Utah offense. He completed 7 of 12 passes for 104 yards and was even more devastating on the ground, rushing for 120 yards on 10 carries and scoring three touchdowns. His 12-yard run opened the scoring in the first quarter, and he added scoring scampers of 24 and 9 yards, consistently gasping the Sun Devils’ defense for critical gains.
The Utes’ offense was methodical and efficient. Running back NaQuari Rogers complemented Dampier’s efforts with two touchdowns on the ground, part of a 48-yard rushing day. Receiver Ryan Davis provided the biggest passing play of the game, a 56-yard reception from Dampier that set up a Rogers score in the third quarter.
Arizona State, which entered the game as a 9.5-point favorite according to sportsbooks despite statistical models slightly favoring Utah, never found its rhythm. Quarterback Jeff Sims of Jacksonville, Florida, struggled through the air, completing 14 of 28 passes for just 84 yards. While he added 68 rushing yards, the Sun Devils’ offense was plagued by inconsistency and a relentless Utah pass rush.
The Utes’ defense was suffocating, holding Arizona State to a single touchdown. The unit, led by safety Jackson Bennee with eight tackles, consistently harassed Sims. Defensive end Logan Fano recorded a sack and six tackles, while a committee of defenders, including Lander Barton and Smith Snowden with six tackles each, swarmed to the ball. The defense sealed the game in the fourth quarter with a series of sacks that pushed the Sun Devils out of scoring position.
Arizona State’s lone bright spot was running back Raleek Brown, who rushed for 67 yards on 14 carries. The Sun Devils’ only touchdown came in the third quarter on a 3-yard run by receiver Jordyn Tyson, who caught eight passes for 40 yards.
The game’s trajectory was set early. After trading scores to end the first quarter with Utah leading 7-3, the Utes took control in the second period. Dampier’s 24-yard touchdown run and a 22-yard scoring dash from Rogers just before halftime gave Utah a 21-3 lead and all the momentum.
Any hope of an Arizona State comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. The Utes scored on their first two possessions of the second half, with Rogers punching in his second touchdown and Dampier adding his third, to extend the lead to 35-10. A final touchdown run from Byrd Ficklin in the fourth quarter closed the scoring for Utah.
The 52-point combined total fell well under the pregame over/under line of 44.5, a testament to the dominance of the Utah defense against a Sun Devils offense that had averaged over 29 points per game.
Arizona State will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Texas Tech. Utah, meanwhile, will travel to Provo to face rival BYU in another key conference matchup.
