Utah Routs Arizona State in Dominant Home Victory
SALT LAKE CITY, Utah (Interstat) — In a commanding display of power and precision, the Utah Utes dismantled the previously unbeaten Arizona State Sun Devils 42 to 10 on Saturday night before a crowd of 51,444 at a raucous Rice-Eccles Stadium. The victory, fueled by a dynamic ground attack and a stifling defense, handed Arizona State its first loss of the season and vaulted both teams to identical 4-1 records.
The game was a stark departure from the pregame projections, which had forecast a tight contest with Interstat’s simulator predicting a 32-30 Utah win and its ELO system giving the Utes just a 52.6 percent chance. Arizona State had entered as a 9.5-point favorite, but Utah rendered those numbers meaningless with a performance that was both dominant and decisive from the second quarter onward.
The Utes set the tone early with a methodical, run-heavy opening drive. Quarterback Devon Dampier, a Tucson, Arizona, native, capped the 15-play, 75-yard march with a 12-yard touchdown run, giving Utah a 7-0 lead. Arizona State responded with a drive of its own, but the Utah defense stiffened in the red zone, forcing the Sun Devils to settle for a 38-yard field goal from J. Gomez, making the score 7-3.
That would be the high-water mark for the visitors. The Utes’ offense, while not prolific through the air, was brutally efficient on the ground. Dampier was the catalyst, finishing with 120 rushing yards and three touchdowns on just 10 carries. His second scoring run, a 24-yard dash in the second quarter, extended Utah’s lead to 14-3. Just before halftime, running back NaQuari Rogers broke free for a 22-yard touchdown run, capping another sustained drive and sending the Utes into the locker room with a commanding 21-3 advantage.
The second half offered no respite for Arizona State. Utah’s defense continued to harass Sun Devils quarterback Jeff Sims, and the offense picked up right where it left off. On the Utes’ first possession of the third quarter, Dampier connected with receiver Ryan Davis on a critical 56-yard pass play down to the Arizona State 13-yard line. Two plays later, Rogers plunged in for his second touchdown of the game from 2 yards out, pushing the lead to 28-3.
Arizona State managed its only touchdown of the game on the ensuing drive, a 3-yard run by receiver Jordyn Tyson that culminated a 75-yard effort, cutting the deficit to 28-10. But any flicker of hope for a Sun Devil comeback was extinguished almost immediately. Utah answered with yet another scoring drive, this one finished by Dampier’s third rushing touchdown, a 9-yard scamper that restored the four-score lead at 35-10.
The Utes added a final exclamation point in the fourth quarter with a 4-yard touchdown run from Byrd Ficklin to produce the final margin of 42-10. The 38 combined points fell well under the over/under line of 44.5.
While Dampier’s legs stole the show, his efficiency through the air was also key; he completed 7 of 12 passes for 104 yards. Ryan Davis was his primary deep threat, hauling in three catches for 68 yards. Rogers led the Utes’ running back corps with 48 yards and two touchdowns on 12 carries, while Wayshawn Parker added 29 yards on seven attempts.
Defensively, Utah was relentless. The Utes logged multiple sacks, with Logan Fano, John Henry Daley, Levani Damuni, and Nate Tilmon all bringing down Sims. The secondary was led by safety Jackson Bennee, who posted a game-high eight tackles. The defensive effort smothered an Arizona State offense that had shown potency in its first four games.
For the Sun Devils, the night was a struggle. Quarterback Jeff Sims of Jacksonville, Florida, was under constant pressure, completing 14 of 28 passes for just 84 yards. He was more effective as a runner, gaining 68 yards on 14 carries, but it was not nearly enough to counter the Utah onslaught. Running back Raleek Brown provided a bright spot, rushing for 67 yards on 14 attempts. Receiver Jordyn Tyson was Sims’ most frequent target, catching eight passes for 40 yards and the team’s lone touchdown.
Linebacker Keyshaun Elliott anchored the Arizona State defense with seven tackles, while defensive backs Adrian Wilson and Myles Rowser each added five.
The loss sends Arizona State back to Tempe to regroup before hosting Texas Tech next Saturday. Utah, meanwhile, will carry significant momentum into its rivalry game, traveling to face BYU in Provo next Saturday. Both teams now sit at 4-1, their seasons dramatically reshaped by Utah’s statement victory under the lights in Salt Lake City.
