Colorado Upsets Iowa State Behind Salter’s Big Day

BOULDER, Colo. (Interstat) — In a result that defied both the betting markets and advanced analytics, the Colorado Buffaloes delivered a stunning 24-17 upset over the Iowa State Cyclones on Saturday at a sold-out Folsom Field.

The Buffaloes, entering the contest with a 1-4 record, were installed as 2.5-point favorites but were given only a 33 percent chance to win by Interstat’s ELO system. They overcame a halftime deficit with a dominant third-quarter performance to hand the Cyclones their first loss of the season.

A crowd of 52,698 watched as Colorado quarterback Kaidon Salter, a junior from Cedar Hill, Texas, orchestrate the victory. Salter completed 16 of 25 passes for 255 yards and two touchdowns, while adding 57 yards on nine carries. His performance was the catalyst for a Buffaloes offense that found its rhythm after a sluggish start.

Iowa State, which fell to 5-1, was led by a spectacular individual effort from running back Abu Sama III. The Des Moines native gashed the Colorado defense for 177 yards on 24 carries, scoring both of the Cyclones’ touchdowns. Despite Sama’s heroics, the Iowa State offense struggled with consistency and critical mistakes.

The first half was a defensive struggle defined by missed opportunities. Colorado struck first, capping a 15-play, 97-yard drive with an 8-yard touchdown run by Micah Welch late in the opening quarter. The Cyclones responded in the second quarter, first with a 38-yard field goal from Chase Smith and then with a 1-yard plunge from Sama with just 14 seconds remaining in the half, giving Iowa State a 10-7 lead at the break.

The game turned dramatically in the third quarter. On Colorado’s first offensive play of the second half, Salter connected with Omarion Miller on a deep post for a 70-yard touchdown, tying the game just 47 seconds into the period.

Iowa State answered with a methodical 11-play, 75-yard drive, all on the ground, culminating in another 1-yard touchdown run from Sama to retake a 17-14 lead. The momentum was short-lived.

Salter and the Buffaloes engineered a commanding 13-play, 80-yard touchdown drive on their next possession. The drive consumed over seven minutes of clock and was capped by a 3-yard touchdown pass from Salter to Joseph Williams, putting Colorado ahead for good at 21-17. Williams, from Arlington, Texas, was Salter’s primary target, hauling in eight catches for 128 yards and the score.

The Cyclones had a chance to tie or take the lead early in the fourth quarter, driving deep into Colorado territory. But on a first-and-goal from the 4-yard line, the drive unraveled. A loss of two yards by Sama was followed by a false start penalty and another loss of three yards, pushing Iowa State back to the 14-yard line. On third down, Colorado safety Tawfiq Byard intercepted a Rocco Becht pass in the end zone, returning it 18 yards to snuff out the Cyclones’ best scoring opportunity of the second half.

Colorado extended its lead to 24-17 with 5:13 remaining on a 29-yard field goal from Alejandro Mata. Iowa State’s final possession ended with a punt, and the Buffaloes’ offense, led by key runs from Dallan Hayden, who finished with 58 yards on 12 carries, successfully ran out the clock to seal the victory.

Iowa State quarterback Rocco Becht finished 18 of 33 for 205 yards and an interception. The Cyclones’ defense was led by Ta’Shawn James, who recorded nine tackles.

The Colorado defense, while yielding significant yardage to Sama, came up with critical stops when needed. Jeremiah Brown led the unit with 10 tackles, while Byard’s fourth-quarter interception was the game’s only turnover and proved to be the decisive play.

Iowa State will look to rebound when it hosts BYU on Oct. 25. Colorado, now 2-4, will travel to face Utah on the same date.
