Notre Dame Dominates North Carolina State in 36‑7 Victory

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (Interstat) — In a commanding performance at a rain-swept Notre Dame Stadium, the Fighting Irish defense suffocated North Carolina State, propelling Notre Dame to a 36-7 victory on Saturday afternoon before a crowd of 77,622.

Quarterback CJ Carr orchestrated a potent passing attack, but it was a relentless Irish defense that forced four turnovers and recorded four sacks, turning a close game at halftime into a second-half rout. The win improved Notre Dame’s record to 3-2, while the Wolfpack fell to 4-2.

The game began as a defensive struggle, with both teams trading punts and struggling to find offensive traction. Notre Dame struck first, capping a methodical 10-play, 58-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown plunge by Jeremiyah Love midway through the opening quarter.

North Carolina State answered early in the second quarter, momentarily silencing the home crowd. On a critical third down, Wolfpack quarterback CJ Bailey connected with receiver Terrell Anderson on a deep post route for a 45-yard touchdown, tying the game at 7.

From that point forward, however, the Notre Dame defense took control. The Wolfpack offense, which had shown flashes of life, was consistently stymied by a swarming Irish front seven and a ball-hawking secondary.

The first half ended with Notre Dame reclaiming the lead. After the Wolfpack defense came up with a crucial interception in the end zone by Asaad Brown Jr. to halt a promising Irish drive, Carr efficiently moved Notre Dame into field goal range in the final seconds. Kicker Noah Burnette drilled a 48-yard field goal as time expired, sending the Irish into the locker room with a 10-7 advantage and all the momentum.

Any hope for a Wolfpack comeback was extinguished in the third quarter. Notre Dame’s defense set the tone immediately, forcing a quick three-and-out. On the ensuing possession, Carr engineered a 90-yard touchdown drive, finishing it with an 18-yard scoring strike to KK Smith to extend the lead to 17-7.

The Irish defense then delivered the knockout blow. On North Carolina State’s next series, Bailey was intercepted by safety Adon Shuler, who returned the pick 44 yards deep into Wolfpack territory. The offense capitalized a few plays later, with Carr finding a wide-open Will Pauling for a 12-yard touchdown, pushing the lead to 24-7.

The fourth quarter became a showcase for the Irish defense. They forced a safety when the Wolfpack snapped the ball out of their own end zone on a punt attempt, and linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa added another interception, his pick setting up a second Burnette field goal, this one from 34 yards.

Notre Dame put the final exclamation point on the victory with a 99-yard drive that consumed over six minutes of the fourth quarter. Love capped the marathon series with his second rushing touchdown of the day, a 1-yard dive that finalized the scoring.

Carr finished an efficient 19 of 31 for 342 yards and two touchdowns. Pauling was his primary target, hauling in four passes for 105 yards and a score. The Irish ground game was workmanlike, with Love and Jadarian Price combining for over 150 rushing yards.

For North Carolina State, Bailey struggled under constant pressure, completing 17 of 30 passes for 186 yards with one touchdown and three interceptions. The Wolfpack’s leading rusher, Hollywood Smothers, was held to 46 yards on 12 carries. The North Carolina State defense was led by linebackers Caden Fordham and Ronnie Royal III, who each recorded 10 tackles.

The victory sets up a major showdown for Notre Dame, which will host rival Southern California next Saturday. North Carolina State has a bye week before traveling to face Pittsburgh on Oct. 25.
