Nebraska at Maryland
COLLEGE PARK, Md. (Interstat) — In a wild, back-and-forth Big Ten contest defined by explosive plays and critical turnovers, Dylan Raiola’s fourth touchdown pass with 1:08 remaining lifted Nebraska to a 34-31 victory over Maryland on Saturday at SECU Stadium.
The Cornhuskers, who squandered a 17-point lead, improved to 4-1 overall. The Terrapins, suffering their first loss, also moved to 4-1.
Nebraska’s game-winning drive covered 81 yards in nine plays, capped by a 3-yard strike from Raiola to Dane Key. The march was kept alive by a crucial 13-yard completion from Raiola to backup quarterback Heinrich Haarberg on a third-down trick play, moving the ball to the Maryland 3-yard line.
The game was a tale of two halves. Nebraska dominated early, building a 24-7 lead late in the second quarter behind the efficient passing of Raiola and a powerful ground game. The sophomore quarterback from Buford, Georgia, finished 20 of 29 for 260 yards and the four scores.
His primary target was Nyziah Hunter, who caught five passes for 125 yards and two touchdowns, including a 64-yard score on Nebraska’s opening drive. Running back Emmett Johnson provided the balance, rushing for 176 yards on 21 carries, repeatedly gashing the Maryland defense.
Maryland’s comeback began just before halftime. After a Sean O’Haire field goal cut the deficit to 24-17, the Terrapins exploded in the third quarter. They took their first lead on a pick-six, as cornerback Dontay Joyner intercepted a Raiola pass and returned it 67 yards for a touchdown, putting Maryland ahead 31-24.
The Terrapins’ defense, which had been shredded in the first half, stiffened, forcing two second-half interceptions. Jamare Glasker and Messiah Delhomme also had picks for Maryland.
Nebraska chipped away, with a 27-yard Kyle Cunanan field goal early in the fourth quarter pulling them within four points. After forcing a Maryland punt, the Cornhuskers embarked on their decisive final drive.
Maryland quarterback Malik Washington, from Glen Burnie, Maryland, was 27 of 37 for 249 yards and a touchdown through the air, adding 23 yards on the ground. DeJuan Williams scored a rushing touchdown for the Terrapins, and Leon Haughton Jr. caught a 21-yard touchdown pass.
The loss overshadowed a strong defensive effort from Maryland’s secondary and linebackers. Lavain Scruggs, Jalen Huskey and Daniel Wingate each recorded seven tackles. Zahir Mathis added a sack for a unit that kept Maryland in the game after a slow start.
Nebraska’s defense was led by Javin Wright’s 12 tackles.
The game was a significant result for both teams’ early-season aspirations in the crowded Big Ten. Nebraska, which was a 6.5-point underdog according to Interstat, managed to secure a road victory against a previously unbeaten opponent. The total points, 65, sailed over the projected over/under of 47.5.
Nebraska travels to face Minnesota next Friday. Maryland will head to UCLA for a game next Saturday.
