Florida at Texas A&M
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — In a game that began with an offensive explosion, Texas A&M weathered an early storm from Florida and used a dominant defensive performance over the final three quarters to secure a 34-17 victory before a crowd of 105,086 at Kyle Field on Saturday.
The Aggies remained undefeated, improving to 5-0, while the Gators fell to 2-3.
The first quarter was a frantic shootout, with both teams combining for four touchdowns. Florida struck first, marching 75 yards on a methodical opening drive capped by a 1-yard touchdown pass from quarterback DJ Lagway to tight end Amir Jackson.
Texas A&M answered immediately, with quarterback Marcel Reed connecting with receiver Mario Craver on a 67-yard pass to set up his own 8-yard touchdown run, tying the game.
Undeterred, the Gators engineered another long drive, culminating in a 6-yard touchdown pass from Lagway to Dallas Wilson to retake the lead. The Aggies responded in kind, with Reed finding Jamarion Morrow for a 22-yard scoring strike to end a 75-yard drive and knot the score at 14-14 as the opening quarter concluded.
The second quarter saw the defenses begin to take control. Texas A&M broke the tie with a 22-yard touchdown run by Le’Veon Moss, the only score of the period, to take a 21-14 lead into halftime. The Gators’ offense, so potent in the first quarter, was stifled by the Aggies’ defense, which recorded two sacks and forced a key fumble.
The defensive struggle continued in the third quarter. Texas A&M extended its lead with a 26-yard field goal from Randy Bond after a fumble recovery by linebacker Taurean York deep in Florida territory. The Gators managed to answer with a 45-yard field goal from Trey Smack, cutting the deficit to 24-17, but would get no closer.
The Aggies put the game away in the fourth quarter with a methodical 2-yard touchdown run by Rueben Owens II. The final nail in the coffin came on the ensuing Florida possession when defensive end Dayon Hayes strip-sacked Lagway and recovered the fumble, setting up a 22-yard Bond field goal to provide the final margin.
Reed was efficient for Texas A&M, completing 16 of 26 passes for 234 yards and one touchdown while adding 37 yards and another score on the ground. The Aggies’ rushing attack was a committee effort, led by Owens II, who had 51 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries. The defense was relentless, with linebacker Daymion Sanford recording eight tackles and the unit combining for four sacks and three forced fumbles.
For Florida, Lagway finished 21 of 37 for 245 yards and two touchdowns but was hampered by three sacks and two lost fumbles. Running back Jadan Baugh was a bright spot, rushing for 65 yards and adding four receptions. The Gators’ defense was led by linebacker Aaron Chiles, who posted nine tackles.
The game defied pregame projections, as Florida had been a 6.5-point favorite and the total score of 51 went over the over/under line of 47.5. Texas A&M will look to maintain its perfect record next Saturday on the road at Arkansas. Florida will return home to host Mississippi State.
