Texas A&M Rallies, Stays Unbeaten With 34‑17 Win Over Florida
COLLEGE STATION, Texas (Interstat) — In a game that defied its explosive start, the Texas A&M Aggies methodically dismantled the Florida Gators, overcoming an early 14-point deficit to secure a 34-17 victory before a crowd of 105,086 at Kyle Field on Saturday.
The win preserved Texas A&M’s perfect season, pushing its record to 5-0, while Florida fell to 2-3.
The contest began as a shootout, with the teams combining for four touchdowns in a dizzying first quarter. Florida, led by quarterback DJ Lagway, struck first with surgical precision. The Willis, Texas, native engineered a 75-yard opening drive, capping it with a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Amir Jackson.
After Texas A&M answered swiftly with an 8-yard scramble by quarterback Marcel Reed, the Gators responded immediately. Lagway connected with Dallas Wilson on a 6-yard scoring pass, concluding another efficient 75-yard march to give Florida a 14-7 lead.
The Aggies, however, demonstrated their resilience. Reed, a dynamic playmaker from Nashville, Tennessee, needed just two plays on the ensuing possession to tie the game, finding Jamarion Morrow on a 22-yard touchdown pass to make it 14-14 as the first quarter concluded.
The second quarter saw the game’s momentum shift decisively. The Aggies’ defense, which had been gashed early, began to impose its will. A sack by defensive lineman Albert Regis that resulted in a fumble, recovered by Florida, stalled a Gators drive and set the tone. Texas A&M then seized its first lead with 13:04 remaining in the half on a powerful 22-yard touchdown run by Le’Veon Moss.
Florida’s offense, so potent in the first quarter, sputtered for the remainder of the half. The Gators managed just three first downs after the first quarter and were plagued by penalties and dropped passes, failing to score before the break as the Aggies took a 21-14 lead into halftime.
The defensive struggle continued into the third quarter. Texas A&M capitalized on a fumble recovery by linebacker Taurean York deep in Florida territory, leading to a 26-yard field goal from Randy Bond to extend the lead to 24-14.
Florida’s only response was a 45-yard field goal from Trey Smack, cutting the deficit to 24-17. The Gators’ drive was kept alive by a 25-yard reception from Eugene Wilson III, but the offense could not find the end zone against a stiffening Aggies defense.
Texas A&M put the game away in the fourth quarter with a methodical, clock-draining drive. A 14-play, 62-yard possession consumed over six minutes and was finished by Rueben Owens II, who plunged in from 2 yards out for a touchdown, giving the Aggies a commanding 31-17 lead.
The final blow came on the ensuing Florida possession, as defensive lineman Dayon Hayes strip-sacked Lagway and recovered the fumble himself. The turnover led to Bond’s second field goal, a 22-yarder, to provide the final margin of 34-17.
Statistically, Lagway finished 21 of 37 for 245 yards and two touchdowns, but was sacked four times and lost two fumbles. Running back Jadan Baugh was a workhorse for the Gators, rushing 18 times for 65 yards and catching four passes.
For Texas A&M, Reed was the catalyst, completing 16 of 26 passes for 234 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also rushing for 37 yards and another score. The Aggies’ ground game was a committee effort, with Owens II scoring once and Moss adding another touchdown. Defensively, the Aggies were led by linebacker Daymion Sanford, who recorded eight tackles, and a unit that consistently pressured Lagway in the second half.
The result was a stark reversal of the pregame projections, where Florida had been a 6.5-point underdog and the total was expected to be much higher. The Aggies’ defense held the Gators to just three points after the first quarter, proving to be the difference in a key Southeastern Conference matchup.
Florida will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Mississippi State. Texas A&M, now 5-0, will travel to face Arkansas next Saturday.
