Arkansas at Tennessee
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a thrilling Southeastern Conference shootout before a raucous crowd of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium on Saturday, the Tennessee Volunteers held off a furious fourth-quarter rally by the Arkansas Razorbacks to secure a 34-31 victory.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Arkansas controlling the early stages before Tennessee seized momentum and built a lead that proved just enough to withstand the visitors’ late surge.
Arkansas quarterback Taylen Green was the catalyst for his team, delivering a dynamic performance. The 6-foot-6, 220-pound junior from Lewisville, Texas, completed 21 of 31 passes for 256 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading the Razorbacks in rushing with 63 yards and another score on 17 carries.
His primary target was Raylen Sharpe, who caught seven passes for 76 yards, while O’Mega Blake added five receptions for 65 yards. The ground game was powered by Mike Washington Jr., who gashed the Tennessee defense for 131 yards and a touchdown on 19 carries.
Tennessee’s offense was efficient, led by quarterback Joey Aguilar. The Antioch, California, native threw for 221 yards and a touchdown on 16-of-25 passing and added 59 yards on the ground. Tight end Miles Kitselman was a key weapon, hauling in five passes for 56 yards and a touchdown.
The Razorbacks struck first, marching 78 yards on their opening drive, capped by an 11-yard touchdown run from Green. After forcing a punt, Arkansas added a 28-yard field goal from Scott Starzyk to take a 10-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Tennessee responded with a 75-yard drive of its own, finished by a 17-yard touchdown run from DeSean Bishop to cut the deficit to 10-7.
The second quarter was a back-and-forth affair. A 37-yard field goal from Tennessee’s Max Gilbert tied the game before Arkansas reclaimed the lead. A methodical 71-yard drive, featuring several key runs from Green and Washington, ended with a 1-yard Washington touchdown plunge, putting the Razorbacks up 17-10.
The Volunteers answered just before halftime, as Aguilar connected with Kitselman on an 8-yard touchdown pass to knot the score at 17-17 heading into the break.
Tennessee took control in the third quarter. Gilbert nailed a 50-yard field goal to give the Volunteers their first lead of the day at 20-17. After an Arkansas fumble deep in Tennessee territory snuffed out a promising drive, the Volunteers extended their advantage. Peyton Lewis powered in from 2 yards out to culminate a 74-yard drive, making it 27-17.
The Vols seemed to put the game out of reach early in the fourth quarter. Lewis scored his second touchdown, again from 3 yards out, to cap a short drive following a Razorbacks fumble, stretching the lead to 34-17.
Refusing to quit, Arkansas mounted a dramatic comeback. Green engineered a 75-yard drive, finding Rohan Jones for a 9-yard touchdown pass to cut the lead to 34-24.
After a defensive stop, the Razorbacks got the ball back with under five minutes to play. Green was surgical, moving his team 80 yards in just over two minutes and hitting Kam Shanks for a 12-yard touchdown, pulling Arkansas within a field goal at 34-31 with 2:55 remaining.
The Razorbacks’ defense needed one final stop, but Aguilar sealed the game for Tennessee. On the ensuing drive, he broke free for a 28-yard run on first down, allowing the Volunteers to run out the clock and escape with the win.
Defensively, the game was defined by tackling volume. Arkansas linebacker Stephen Dix Jr. recorded a game-high 11 tackles, while teammate Xavian Sorey Jr. had eight. For Tennessee, defensive back Andre Turrentine led the way with 11 tackles, and Edrees Farooq added nine. The Volunteers’ defensive front applied consistent pressure, with Daevin Hobbs, Tyre West and Jordan Ross each recording a sack.
With the loss, Arkansas falls to 2-3 on the season. Tennessee improves to 4-1 and will travel to face Alabama next Saturday. Arkansas returns home to host Texas A&M.
