South Carolina at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle defined by key turnovers and stifling red zone stands, the LSU Tigers grinded out a 20-10 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks in front of 101,921 fans at a raucous Tiger Stadium on Saturday.

The game, a far cry from the high-scoring affair projected by oddsmakers, saw the LSU defense relentlessly pressure South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers and force three crucial turnovers, while the Tigers’ offense did just enough behind a prolific connection between quarterback Garrett Nussmeier and tight end Trey’Dez Green.

South Carolina struck first in explosive fashion. After a first-quarter LSU field goal, Gamecocks running back Matt Fuller broke free for a stunning 72-yard touchdown run with just 20 seconds remaining in the opening quarter, giving the visitors a 7-3 lead.

LSU responded in the second quarter, methodically driving down the field. Nussmeier capped the series with a 6-yard touchdown pass to Green, tying the game at 10. The Tigers’ defense then took over, intercepting Sellers twice before halftime to snuff out promising South Carolina drives. The first pick came from Tamarcus Cooley, and the second was hauled in by DQ Smith, sending the teams into the locker room deadlocked.

The Gamecocks reclaimed the lead early in the third quarter with a 47-yard field goal from William Joyce, making it 10-10. The advantage was short-lived. On the ensuing possession, Nussmeier found receiver Kyle Parker deep for a 43-yard touchdown strike, putting the Tigers ahead for good at 17-10.

LSU had a chance to put the game away later in the third after a 56-yard run by Ju’Juan Johnson set up a first-and-goal. But the South Carolina defense, which played valiantly throughout, came up with a massive stop. On third down from the 9-yard line, Peyton Williams intercepted a Nussmeier pass in the end zone, keeping the Gamecocks within a single score.

South Carolina’s offense, however, could not capitalize. Hampered by penalties and the relentless LSU pass rush, the Gamecocks were unable to mount a sustained drive in the fourth quarter. Sellers was sacked three times, including a critical 12-yard loss by DJ Pickett in the final two minutes.

LSU sealed the victory with a 22-yard field goal from Damian Ramos with 1:47 remaining, set up by another long completion from Nussmeier to Green. The Tigers’ defense then closed out the game, preserving the 10-point win.

Nussmeier finished an efficient 20 of 33 for 254 yards and two touchdowns, with Green as his primary target. The towering tight end hauled in 8 catches for 119 yards and a score. The LSU defense was led by A.J. Haulcy, who posted 11 tackles, while Harold Perkins Jr. and Whit Weeks each recorded a sack.

For South Carolina, Sellers was held to 124 passing yards and was intercepted twice. The Gamecocks’ ground game, outside of Fuller’s long touchdown, was contained by a stout LSU front.

With the win, LSU improves to 4-1 on the season and rebounds from its loss to Ole Miss. South Carolina falls to 3-2. The Tigers travel to face Vanderbilt next Saturday, while the Gamecocks return home to host Oklahoma.
