Dayton Holds Off Morehead State’s Furious Rally for Road Win

HALDEMAN, Ky. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a stunning reversal of fortune, the Dayton Flyers withstood a furious second-half rally by the Morehead State Eagles to escape Jayne Stadium with a 35-28 victory on Saturday.

The Flyers, who led 28-0 at halftime, saw that commanding lead evaporate in a afternoonmarish third quarter where the Eagles scored 28 unanswered points. Dayton ultimately sealed the win with a gritty, clock-draining touchdown drive in the fourth quarter to improve to 3-1 on the season, while Morehead State fell to 2-3.

The first half was a masterclass in control by Dayton. The Flyers opened the scoring on their first possession, capping a methodical drive with a 4-yard touchdown run by Luke Hansen. The floodgates opened in the second quarter, starting with a trick play. Wide receiver Gavin Lochow took a lateral and launched a 19-yard touchdown pass to a wide-open Donovan Weatherly.

Dayton’s defense then set up the next score, as cornerback Josh Williams intercepted a Bryce Patterson pass. The Flyers capitalized with Hansen’s second touchdown, a 19-yard scamper. Just before halftime, quarterback Bryce Schondelmyer found Lochow for a 6-yard touchdown pass, sending the Flyers into the locker room with a seemingly insurmountable four-touchdown lead.

The complexion of the game changed entirely after halftime. The Eagles, led by quarterback Bryce Patterson of Versailles, Kentucky, emerged a different team. Morehead State’s offense, which had been stymied for two quarters, found its rhythm immediately. The Eagles marched downfield and got on the board with a 1-yard touchdown plunge by linebacker Isaac Stopke.

The Dayton offense, so efficient in the first half, went three-and-out on its first possession of the third quarter, and the Eagles promptly drove for another score. Patterson connected with Ryan Upp on a 9-yard touchdown pass. After another quick Dayton punt, Patterson struck again, hitting Cannon Dinger for a 41-yard touchdown bomb to pull the Eagles within a single score at 28-21.

The stunning comeback was completed moments later. Schondelmyer completed a pass to Dominic Vrbancic, who fumbled at the end of the play. Morehead State defensive back Sidney Webb of Roanoke, Virginia, scooped up the loose ball and returned it for a touchdown, tying the game at 28-28 and sending the home crowd into a frenzy.

After the chaotic third quarter, the fourth became a tense defensive struggle. Morehead State had a chance to take the lead, driving deep into Dayton territory, but the Flyers’ defense came up with a massive stop. Vincent Firenze blocked a 41-yard field goal attempt by Jordan Price, preserving the tie.

Dayton then embarked on the game-winning drive, a 14-play, 59-yard march that consumed over seven minutes of clock. The Flyers leaned heavily on running back Mason Hackett, who carried the ball eight times on the drive, finally punching it in from 3 yards out with 1:46 remaining to put Dayton back on top.

Morehead State’s final possession ended with four consecutive incomplete passes from Patterson, allowing the Flyers to run out the clock.

Schondelmyer, a Brookville, Ohio, native, was efficient for Dayton, completing 18 of 26 passes for 221 yards and a touchdown. Hackett was the workhorse, rushing for 92 yards and the decisive touchdown, while Hansen added 62 yards and two scores on the ground. Lochow was a versatile weapon, catching five passes for 54 yards and a touchdown, throwing another, and adding 38 return yards.

For Morehead State, Patterson finished 15 of 27 for 252 yards with two touchdowns and an interception, also adding 22 yards on the ground. His top targets were Upp, who caught five passes for 60 yards and a score, and Dinger, whose two catches went for 74 yards and a touchdown. Stopke, primarily a linebacker, carried the ball 14 times out of the backfield, scoring one touchdown.

The result was an upset, as Morehead State had been a 10-point pregame favorite. The total score of 63 points also easily surpassed the over/under line of 45.5.

Dayton travels to face Valparaiso next Saturday, while Morehead State heads to Stetson.
