Princeton Rallies Past Columbia for 17‑10 Victory
PRINCETON, N.J. (Interstat) — In a defensive struggle that defied pregame projections, the Princeton Tigers rallied from a 10-point first-quarter deficit to defeat the Columbia Lions 17-10 on Friday night at Princeton Stadium.
The game, a low-scoring affair that saw the teams combine for a total of 24 points, fell well short of the over/under line of 48.5. Columbia had entered the contest as a 4.5-point favorite, but it was Princeton that controlled the second half to even both teams’ records at 1-1.
Columbia’s offense came out firing, orchestrating two impressive first-quarter drives to seize early control. The Lions opened the scoring on their second possession, marching 69 yards in 11 plays. The drive was keyed by a 22-yard completion from quarterback Chase Goodwin to Titus Evans and a 20-yard strike to Ethan Hebb that set up first-and-goal. After a penalty pushed them back, the Lions settled for a 29-yard field goal from Hugo Merry to take a 3-0 lead.
The Lions’ defense forced a quick three-and-out, and the offense promptly embarked on another lengthy drive, this one covering 89 yards. Goodwin again connected with Evans for 16 yards and found Hebb for a 25-yard gain to move into Princeton territory. A 15-yard run by Xander Eschelman brought Columbia to the Princeton 3-yard line, and three plays later, Lucas Bullock powered in from 2 yards out for a touchdown. Merry’s extra point gave Columbia a 10-0 advantage with 14 seconds remaining in the opening quarter.
From that point forward, the Columbia offense stalled, hampered by turnovers and a resilient Princeton defense. The Tigers began to claw back into the game in the second quarter, capitalizing on a Columbia mistake. With under two minutes to play in the half, Columbia’s Chase Goodwin was intercepted by Princeton linebacker AJ Pigford, who returned the ball to the Columbia 1-yard line.
After two running plays netted nothing, Princeton quarterback Asher Weiner plunged in from 1 yard out for a touchdown with 49 seconds left. The extra point cut Columbia’s lead to 10-7 at the intermission.
The third quarter was a defensive standoff, with neither team able to sustain a scoring drive. Princeton’s offense, utilizing multiple quarterbacks, finally found a rhythm early in the fourth quarter. Led by Blaine Hipa, the Tigers drove 80 yards in 10 plays. Hipa completed key passes to Josh Robinson for 30 and 13 yards to move deep into Columbia territory. Running back Ethan Clark finished the drive with a 2-yard touchdown run, giving Princeton its first lead of the night at 14-10 with 13:27 remaining.
Columbia’s ensuing possession went three-and-out, and Princeton quickly extended its lead. A 49-yard completion from Kai Colon to Roman Laurio set up the Tigers in the red zone, and when the drive stalled, Esteban Nunez Perez connected on a 38-yard field goal to make it 17-10 with 9:21 left on the clock.
The Lions had one final chance to tie the game, taking over at their own 10-yard line with 1:54 remaining. Backup quarterback Xander Menapace led a frantic, last-ditch drive, completing six passes to move Columbia to the Princeton 42-yard line. With three seconds left, Menapace’s final pass attempt into the end zone for Titus Evans fell incomplete, sealing the victory for the Tigers.
For Columbia, quarterback Chase Goodwin finished 19 of 28 for 165 yards but threw two critical interceptions. Titus Evans was his primary target, hauling in eight receptions for 93 yards. The Lions’ ground game was led by Griffin Johnson, who rushed for 46 yards on 10 carries.
Princeton’s offense was a committee effort. Kai Colon completed 7 of 17 passes for 145 yards, while Blaine Hipa added 93 yards through the air and a team-high 38 yards rushing on eight attempts. Josh Robinson was the top receiver for the Tigers with four catches for 73 yards.
Defensively, Princeton was led by linebackers Marco Scarano and AJ Pigford, each of whom recorded an interception. Columbia’s defense was anchored by linebacker Jack Smiechowski, who also registered an interception.
Both teams return to action on Saturday, Oct. 11. Columbia will host Lehigh, while Princeton will welcome Mercer to Princeton Stadium.
