Texans Outlast Thunderbirds in High-Scoring Shootout
STEPHENVILLE, Texas (Interstat) — In a wild, high-scoring affair that defied pregame projections, the unbeaten Tarleton State Texans outlasted the Southern Utah Thunderbirds 52-42 on Saturday night at Tarleton Memorial Stadium.
The game, which featured a combined 94 points, saw the Texans improve to 5-0 on the season, while the Thunderbirds fell to a frustrating 1-4.
The offensive fireworks began immediately. Southern Utah needed just over a minute to strike first, with running back Joshua Dye breaking loose for a 48-yard touchdown run. Tarleton State answered with a methodical drive, capped by a 10-yard touchdown run from Caleb Lewis.
The first-quarter shootout continued as Southern Utah quarterback Will Burns responded with a spectacular 67-yard touchdown scramble, but the Texans again had an answer. Quarterback Daniel Greek connected with receiver Trevon West on a 32-yard scoring strike to end the period with the teams tied at 14.
The second quarter was more of the same. Tarleton State took its first lead of the game early in the frame when Lewis powered in for his second touchdown from 3 yards out. Southern Utah’s Dye, however, continued his dominant performance, scoring his second touchdown of the day on a 12-yard run to tie the game at 21.
The Texans reclaimed the lead just over two minutes later when running back Tre Page III exploded for a 46-yard touchdown run. The Thunderbirds then embarked on a marathon 16-play, 70-yard drive that consumed over six minutes of clock, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass from Burns to Shane Carr, knotting the score at 28.
Southern Utah was not finished in the half. They got the ball back with just over three minutes remaining and Dye finished the drive with his third touchdown, an 18-yard run, to send the Thunderbirds into the locker room with a 35-28 lead.
The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter. Tarleton State received the second-half kickoff and Greek immediately engineered a 75-yard touchdown drive, finding Peyton Kramer for a 20-yard score to tie the game at 35.
After a Southern Utah punt, the Texans struck again. A 44-yard completion from Greek to West set up a 4-yard touchdown run by Page III, giving Tarleton State a 42-35 lead. The Thunderbirds responded with a lightning-fast counterpunch, as Dye ripped off a 59-yard touchdown run on the ensuing drive, his fourth of the game, to tie it at 42.
Tarleton State then began to seize control. They marched down the field on their next possession, settling for a 32-yard Brad Larson field goal to take a 45-42 lead late in the third quarter.
The game’s critical turnover came early in the fourth quarter. With Southern Utah driving to reclaim the lead, Burns’ pass was intercepted by Tarleton State defensive back Ja’Voni Melidor. The Texans capitalized on the short field, with Greek hitting Cody Jackson for a 30-yard touchdown, extending their lead to 52-42.
Southern Utah’s offense, so potent for three quarters, sputtered in the final period, managing only two first downs as the Texans’ defense stiffened. Tarleton State then effectively drained the clock with its powerful running game to secure the victory.
Daniel Greek was efficient and effective for the Texans, completing 16 of 21 passes for 282 yards and three touchdowns. His favorite target was Trevon West, who hauled in six catches for 120 yards and a score. The Tarleton State ground game was led by Tre Page III, who gashed the Thunderbirds for 198 yards and two touchdowns on 19 carries.
For Southern Utah, the loss came despite heroic efforts from two players. Joshua Dye was a workhorse, rushing for 189 yards and four touchdowns on 19 carries. Quarterback Will Burns was dynamic, passing for 121 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for 101 yards and another score.
The final score of 94 points sailed far over the pregame over/under line of 63.5. Tarleton State, which had been projected by Interstat’s ELO system with a 91.6 percent chance to win, covered the spread as Southern Utah was a 20.5-point underdog.
Tarleton State looks to continue its perfect season on the road next Saturday at Utah Tech. Southern Utah returns home for a bye week before hosting Abilene Christian on Oct. 18.
