Panthers Dominate Eagles in Lopsided ACC Matchup

PITTSBURGH (Interstat) — Mason Heintschel accounted for four touchdowns and the Pittsburgh Panthers’ defense delivered a dominant performance, overwhelming the Boston College Eagles 48-7 on Saturday afternoon at Acrisure Stadium.

Heintschel, a sophomore quarterback from Oregon, Ohio, was surgical, completing 30 of 41 passes for 323 yards and three touchdowns while adding 28 yards and another score on the ground. His command of the offense was evident from the start, leading the Panthers on scoring drives on their first two possessions to erase an early deficit and never look back.

The Panthers improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Eagles fell to 1-3.

Boston College struck first on the game’s opening drive, capitalizing on a pair of key penalties against the Pittsburgh defense. The Eagles marched into Panthers territory, but the drive stalled, forcing a punt. The early 7-0 lead, however, was the high point for the visitors.

Pittsburgh responded immediately with a 10-play, 76-yard drive capped by a 14-yard touchdown pass from Heintschel to tight end Justin Holmes. After forcing a quick three-and-out, the Panthers’ next possession ended with a 31-yard field goal from Trey Butkowski, giving them a 10-7 lead late in the first quarter that they would not relinquish.

The second quarter was a complete unraveling for Boston College and a showcase of Pittsburgh’s offensive firepower. The Panthers exploded for 21 points in the frame, turning a close game into a rout. Heintschel connected with his favorite target, Kenny Johnson, on a 12-yard scoring strike. Johnson, a wide receiver from York, Pennsylvania, finished with a game-high nine receptions for 115 yards and the touchdown.

The Panthers’ ground game then took over, with Juelz Goff plunging in from 3 yards out and Ja’Kyrian Turner adding a 6-yard touchdown run with just 10 seconds remaining in the half to send Pittsburgh into the locker room with a commanding 31-7 advantage.

Any hope of a Boston College comeback was extinguished in the third quarter as the Panthers picked up where they left off. Heintschel found Deuce Spann for a 10-yard touchdown and later connected with Zion Fowler-El on an 18-yard score to push the lead to 45-7.

The Panthers’ defense was relentless, harassing three different Boston College quarterbacks throughout the contest. The Eagles cycled through Dylan Lonergan, Grayson James, and Shaker Reisig in an attempt to find a spark, but the Pittsburgh pass rush, led by Rasheem Biles and Jahsear Whittington who each recorded a sack, made it a long afternoon. The secondary was equally disruptive, with defensive back Shadarian Harrison intercepting a James pass in the third quarter.

Boston College’s offensive struggles were stark. The trio of Eagles quarterbacks combined for a paltry 189 passing yards. Lonergan started but was largely ineffective, completing 9 of 18 passes for 89 yards before being replaced. James struggled mightily, completing just 2 of 9 attempts for 30 yards with an interception.

The lone bright spot for the Eagles came in the final minutes against Pittsburgh’s reserves. Third-string quarterback Shaker Reisig, a freshman from Tulsa, Oklahoma, engineered a late 80-yard drive, culminating in a 3-yard touchdown pass to Kaelan Chudzinski with 1:52 remaining to avoid the shutout. Reisig was perfect on the drive, completing all three of his pass attempts for 70 yards and the score.

Pittsburgh’s final points came on a 47-yard Butkowski field goal early in the fourth quarter, capping the scoring at 48-7.

Defensively, the Panthers were led by linebacker Kyle Louis, who registered five tackles. A host of other defenders, including Abe Ibrahim, Cole Woodson, and Favor Bate of Boston College, each recorded four stops. The Panthers held the Eagles to just 55 total yards in the first half and controlled the line of scrimmage throughout.

The victory was a resounding bounce-back for Pittsburgh after a close loss to Louisville the previous week. The Panthers will look to build on this momentum as they head into a tough road test at Florida State next Saturday.

For Boston College, the loss extends a difficult stretch after a season-opening win over Fordham. The Eagles have now lost three straight, each by increasingly wider margins, and will face a significant challenge next week when they return home to host Clemson.
