Hampton at Elon

ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — Jimmyll Williams rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown, and the Elon Phoenix scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Hampton Pirates for a 41-20 victory on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium.

The game was a tale of two halves for Hampton, which saw a promising start and a third-quarter lead dissolve under a relentless Elon ground attack and a series of costly mistakes.

Elon improved to 2-2 on the season, while Hampton dropped to 1-3.

The Pirates struck first, capitalizing on a methodical opening drive that culminated in a 44-yard field goal from Brett Starling. After forcing an Elon punt, Hampton marched down the field again, aided by a 15-yard face mask penalty, to set up a second Starling field goal, this time from 33 yards, to take a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter.

The Phoenix responded swiftly. On the first play of the second quarter, quarterback Landen Clark connected with Isaiah Fuhrmann on an 81-yard touchdown pass, giving Elon its first lead at 7-6. Fuhrmann finished with six receptions for 135 yards and the score.

Elon extended its lead later in the quarter after Hampton quarterback Brenton Toles III, in for a series, was intercepted by Ishmel Atkins. The Phoenix drive stalled, but Luke Barnes nailed a 34-yard field goal to make it 10-6. Hampton had a chance to answer before halftime, driving into Elon territory, but the drive ended with a series of incomplete passes from starter Braden Davis, sending the teams to the break with Elon leading 10-6.

Hampton exploded out of the locker room, seizing momentum with two quick touchdowns. On the first play from scrimmage in the third quarter, Jah’Kei Chavis broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run. After the Hampton defense forced a fumble that was recovered by Chris Jackson, Davis found Tae’Shaun Johnson for a 44-yard touchdown pass, pushing the Pirates ahead 20-10.

Chavis was a bright spot for Hampton, rushing for 94 yards and the long score, while Johnson hauled in six passes for 110 yards and a touchdown.

The Pirates’ lead was short-lived. Elon answered with a 6-yard touchdown run by Clark to cap a 75-yard drive, cutting the deficit to 20-17. The Phoenix then took the lead for good early in the fourth quarter on a 33-yard field goal from Barnes, making it 24-20.

From there, the Elon running game took over. TJ Thomas Jr. plunged in from a yard out to cap a dominant 66-yard drive, and after a Davis interception by Tony Hart III, Williams put the game out of reach with a 14-yard touchdown run with under two minutes to play. Thomas finished with 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns, also contributing significantly in the return game.

The Elon defense stifled any hope of a Hampton comeback, intercepting three passes on the day. The Pirates were also plagued by 10 penalties for 75 yards.

Davis finished 14 of 27 for 194 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions for Hampton, adding 26 yards on the ground. Clark was 10 of 23 for 169 yards with one touchdown and one interception for Elon, and also ran for a score.

Hampton will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Norfolk State. Elon hits the road to face Towson.
