Elon Pulls Away From Hampton in Second Half for Decisive Victory
ELON, N.C. (Interstat) — Jimmyll Williams rushed for 172 yards and a touchdown, and the Elon Phoenix scored 17 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from the Hampton Pirates for a 41-20 victory on Saturday at Rhodes Stadium.
The game was a tale of two halves, with Hampton seizing momentum after halftime before Elon’s ground game and defense took over in the final period to secure the win. The victory evened Elon’s season record at 2-2, while Hampton fell to 1-3.
Elon quarterback Landen Clark of Radford, Virginia, orchestrated the offense, completing 10 of 23 passes for 169 yards and a touchdown while also rushing for a score. His primary target was Isaiah Fuhrmann of Norfolk, Virginia, who hauled in six receptions for 135 yards and an 81-yard touchdown in the second quarter that shifted the game’s early momentum.
Hampton, which entered the game as a 15.5-point underdog according to Interstat, kept the contest competitive deep into the second half behind the dual-threat play of quarterback Braden Davis. The sophomore from Middletown, Delaware, passed for 194 yards and a touchdown and added 26 yards on the ground.
The Pirates struck first, capitalizing on their opening drive with a 44-yard field goal from Brett Starling. After forcing an Elon punt, Hampton mounted another sustained drive, culminating in a 33-yard Starling field goal to take a 6-0 lead late in the first quarter.
Elon responded swiftly. On the first play of the second quarter, Clark connected with Fuhrmann on an 81-yard catch-and-run touchdown, giving the Phoenix its first lead at 7-6. The home team extended its advantage later in the quarter with a 34-yard field goal from Luke Barnes of Greensboro, North Carolina, to take a 10-6 lead into the locker room.
Hampton exploded out of the gate in the third quarter. On the first play from scrimmage, running back Jah’Kei Chavis of Richmond, Virginia, broke free for a 75-yard touchdown run, reclaiming the lead for the Pirates at 13-10. Chavis finished with 94 yards on 11 carries.
The Pirates were not done. After the Hampton defense, led by a sack from Andre Jackson Jr. that forced a fumble recovered by Chris Jackson of Cleveland, Ohio, got the ball back, Davis found receiver Tae’Shaun Johnson of Toledo, Ohio, for a 44-yard touchdown pass. The score extended Hampton’s lead to 20-10, stunning the home crowd.
Elon began its methodical comeback on the ensuing drive. The Phoenix marched down the field, and Clark capped the possession with a 6-yard touchdown run, cutting the deficit to 20-17. The momentum had clearly swung back to the home side.
The fourth quarter belonged entirely to Elon. Barnes knocked through his second field goal, a 33-yarder, to tie the game at 20 with 11:44 remaining. The Phoenix defense then forced a three-and-out, setting the stage for the decisive drive.
Elon’s ground game took over. Williams ripped off runs of 25, 9, and 7 yards to move the chains before TJ Thomas Jr. of Thomasville, Georgia, plunged in from a yard out to give Elon a 27-20 lead it would not relinquish. Thomas finished with 67 rushing yards and two touchdowns while also contributing 63 yards on kick returns.
Hampton’s attempt to answer ended when Davis was intercepted by Elon defensive back Tony Hart III of Baltimore, Maryland. The Phoenix put the game away on the next possession, with Williams breaking free for a 45-yard run and then scoring from 14 yards out to make it 34-20.
The Elon defense sealed the victory with another interception, this one by Ishmel Atkins of Greensboro, North Carolina, his second of the game, which set up a final touchdown to produce the lopsided final score that belied the game’s competitiveness for three quarters.
The total points scored, 61, went over the pregame over/under line of 55.5. The result defied the pregame projections from Interstat, which gave Elon a 91.2 percent probability to win but had projected a closer final score of 37-31.
Hampton will look to rebound next Saturday when it hosts Norfolk State. Elon opens a two-game road trip with a visit to Towson.
