Morehead State at Presbyterian
CLINTON, S.C. (Interstat) — The Presbyterian Blue Hose remained undefeated Saturday, overwhelming the Morehead State Eagles 41-0 in a nonconference football game at Bailey Memorial Stadium.
Presbyterian, now 4-0, seized control immediately and never relented, scoring 35 points in the first half to hand Morehead State its second loss of the season, dropping the Eagles to 2-2. The dominant performance defied pregame projections from Interstat, which had simulated a narrow 37-36 victory for Presbyterian and gave the Blue Hose a 64.4 percent probability to win.
The Blue Hose offense was explosive from the outset, needing just over two minutes to find the end zone on their first possession. Quarterback Collin Hurst, a 5-foot-10, 165-pound junior from Davie, Florida, capped the drive with a 1-yard touchdown pass to Zach Switzer. Hurst was efficient, completing 11 of 17 passes for 137 yards and two touchdowns while also rushing for another score.
Presbyterian’s defense set the tone early, with defensive back Caleb Francis intercepting Morehead State’s Carter Cravens on the Eagles’ first offensive play. The turnover led directly to another Hurst touchdown pass, this time a 10-yard connection with Dominic Kibby, giving the Blue Hose a 14-0 lead with 11:37 remaining in the opening quarter.
The second quarter was a showcase for the Presbyterian rushing attack. Justin Montgomery broke free for a 14-yard touchdown run, and Switzer delivered the highlight plays of the half with two long scoring runs. Switzer first dashed 66 yards for a touchdown, then broke a 79-yard run just before halftime to extend the lead to 35-0. Switzer finished with 158 rushing yards on just six carries, while Montgomery added 106 yards on 13 attempts.
Morehead State’s offense, led primarily by quarterback Carter Cravens, struggled to sustain drives against a relentless Presbyterian defense. The Eagles penetrated Presbyterian territory only once in the first half, but the drive stalled at the Blue Hose 23-yard line. Cravens completed 10 of 24 passes for 120 yards and was intercepted twice, once by Francis and again by Will Ferrell just before halftime.
The Blue Hose added their final points in the third quarter on a 12-yard touchdown run by Hurst. The Eagles’ best scoring opportunity came late in the third quarter and extended into the fourth. Backup quarterback Bryce Patterson led a 14-play drive that reached the Presbyterian 1-yard line, but his pass into the end zone on fourth down was intercepted by Caleb Francis for his second takeaway of the game, preserving the shutout.
Patterson provided a brief spark for Morehead State, rushing for 37 yards and completing 5 of 9 passes, but the Eagles were ultimately shut out for the first time this season. Anthony Ice was a bright spot for the Eagles’ receiving corps, catching three passes for 68 yards.
Presbyterian’s defense held Morehead State to just 84 net rushing yards and forced three total turnovers. Kip Warren of Morehead State was busy, punting six times for 289 yards.
The Blue Hose begin a stretch of Pioneer Football League games next when they travel to face Butler on Oct. 11. Morehead State opens its Pioneer Football League schedule at home against Dayton on Oct. 4.
