Bucknell Rallies to Defeat Saint Francis (PA) in Nail-Biter

LEWISBURG, Pa. (Interstat) — In a game defined by a dramatic fourth-quarter swing, the Bucknell Bison erased a 10-point second-half deficit to defeat the Saint Francis Red Flash 30-23 on Saturday at Christy Mathewson-Memorial Stadium.

The Bison improved to 2-2 on the season, while the Red Flash remained winless at 0-4.

Saint Francis quarterback Nick Whitfield Jr. put on a prolific passing display, completing 31 of 44 attempts for 377 yards and a touchdown. His primary targets, DJ Maultsby and Peyton Nelson, were consistently effective, with Maultsby hauling in nine catches for 141 yards and a score and Nelson catching 11 passes for 131 yards. Running back Raph Ekechi added two rushing touchdowns for the Red Flash.

Despite the gaudy offensive numbers, Bucknell’s defense made the decisive play when it mattered most. With Saint Francis driving for a potential game-tying or go-ahead score in the final seconds, Bison defensive back Brad Gerken intercepted a Whitfield pass in the end zone with one second remaining to seal the victory.

The game’s outcome defied several pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a Saint Francis victory, 30-27, while its ELO system gave Bucknell a 76.6 percent probability to win. The Red Flash had also been installed as a pregame underdog by 18.5 points. The combined score of 53 points surpassed the over/under line of 48.5.

The first half was a back-and-forth affair that saw Saint Francis take a slim lead into the break. Bucknell struck first, capping an efficient opening drive with a 17-yard touchdown pass from Ralph Rucker IV to TJ Cadden. The Red Flash responded with a dominant second quarter, scoring 14 points. Ekechi powered in from five yards out for his first touchdown, and just before halftime, Whitfield connected with Maultsby on a 10-yard scoring strike to give Saint Francis a 17-10 advantage.

The Red Flash extended their lead to 20-10 early in the third quarter on a 21-yard field goal from Mac Plummer after a promising drive stalled inside the Bucknell 5-yard line.

From that point, the momentum shifted decisively in favor of the home team. Bucknell’s offense, which had been sporadic in the first half, found its rhythm. Rucker IV answered immediately, engineering a drive that he finished himself with an 11-yard touchdown run. The Bison defense then forced a critical turnover when a sack on Whitfield resulted in a fumble recovered by Bucknell’s Luke Freeman.

Capitalizing on the short field, the Bison took their first lead since the first quarter as Michael Cadden broke free for a 20-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving Bucknell with a narrow 22-20 lead late in the third quarter.

Saint Francis reclaimed the lead early in the fourth quarter. A methodical drive, heavily featuring Whitfield’s arm and Ekechi’s legs, culminated in Ekechi’s second touchdown of the day, a 6-yard run. The extra point gave the Red Flash a 23-22 advantage with 7:22 remaining.

The Bison’s final scoring drive was a masterclass in clutch execution. Rucker IV, who finished 15 of 26 for 168 yards with a passing touchdown and a rushing touchdown while adding 66 yards on the ground, used his legs to great effect. He scrambled for 23 yards and then for 9 more to move the Bison into scoring position. Running back Tariq Thomas, who had a game-high 95 rushing yards on just 10 carries, did the rest, bursting through for a 7-yard touchdown. Rucker then found Josh Gary for the critical two-point conversion, putting Bucknell up 30-23 with 5:14 left on the clock.

The game was far from over, however. Whitfield led the Red Flash on a desperate, last-gasp drive, moving the ball from his own 13-yard line to the Bucknell 2-yard line in the final minutes. With time for one more play, Whitfield dropped back and looked for a receiver in the end zone, but Gerken stepped in front of the pass to secure the win for the Bison.

Cadden was a versatile weapon for Bucknell, catching six passes for 78 yards and a touchdown while adding 106 yards on kick returns. Thomas’s 95-yard effort on the ground provided a consistent rushing threat.

The Bison will look to build on the win when they host Richmond on Saturday, Oct. 4. The Red Flash, still in search of their first victory, have a bye next week before traveling to face Duquesne on Saturday, Oct. 11.
