UC Davis Routs Weber State Behind Pinnick’s 3 Touchdowns
DAVIS, Calif. (Interstat) — The UC Davis Aggies erupted for 17 points in the second quarter and never looked back, cruising to a 34-12 victory over the Weber State Wildcats in a nonconference football game Saturday at UC Davis Health Stadium.
The win, fueled by a balanced offensive attack and a stifling defense, improved the Aggies’ record to 2-1, while the Wildcats fell to an even 2-2 on the season.
A defensive struggle defined the first quarter, with both teams exchanging punts and failing to establish a consistent rhythm. Weber State, however, managed to string together the first sustained drive of the game, moving from its own 3-yard line deep into UC Davis territory as the quarter expired.
That drive culminated in a 33-yard field goal from Sloan Calder early in the second quarter, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 lead. It was a short-lived advantage. The Aggies’ offense, which had sputtered in the opening period, suddenly came to life.
Quarterback Caden Pinnick of Loomis engineered a methodical response, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive with a 2-yard touchdown run to put UC Davis ahead 7-3. After forcing a Weber State punt, Pinnick struck again, this time through the air, connecting with Carter Vargas on a 57-yard touchdown pass that stretched the lead to 14-3.
Weber State had a chance to cut into the deficit before halftime, driving to the UC Davis 10-yard line, but the Aggies’ defense held firm. A sack by Jacob Psyk pushed the Wildcats back, and Calder missed a 27-yard field goal attempt, preserving the 11-point lead for the home team. UC Davis then efficiently moved into field goal range, and Hunter Ridley of Lafayette drilled a 45-yard kick as time expired in the half, sending the Aggies into the locker room with a commanding 17-3 lead.
The third quarter saw both teams trade field goals. Calder hit from 29 yards for Weber State, and Ridley answered with a 25-yarder for UC Davis, making the score 20-6 heading into the final period.
Any hopes of a Weber State comeback were quickly extinguished in the fourth quarter. The Aggies needed just four plays to find the end zone, with defensive back Rex Connors of Pleasant Grove, Utah, plunging in from 2 yards out for a touchdown, extending the lead to 27-6.
Weber State’s offense, led primarily by quarterback Jackson Gilkey of Ennis, Texas, showed flashes but struggled to finish drives in the red zone. Gilkey completed 14 of 22 passes for 138 yards and added 57 yards on the ground, but the Wildcats could not convert their opportunities into touchdowns until late in the game.
Following the Connors touchdown, UC Davis delivered the decisive blow. On the first play of the ensuing drive, Pinnick found a wide-open Samuel Gbatu Jr. of Temecula for an 85-yard touchdown strike, pushing the score to 34-6 and putting the game out of reach.
Weber State backup quarterback Dijon Jennings of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, entered the game and led a late scoring drive, finding Marcus Chretien of Houston for an 11-yard touchdown pass with just over three minutes remaining. The two-point conversion attempt failed, setting the final score at 34-12.
Pinnick finished an efficient day, completing 16 of 27 passes for 288 yards and two touchdowns, while also rushing for 48 yards and another score. Gbatu was his primary deep threat, hauling in four passes for 112 yards and the long touchdown. The Aggies’ ground game was a committee effort, with Carter Vargas of Santa Maria rushing for 55 yards and Jordan Fisher of Portland adding 51 yards.
For Weber State, running back Davion Godley of Richmond, Texas, shouldered the load with 60 rushing yards on 19 attempts. Gilkey’s top targets were Marvin Session of Missouri City, who had three catches for 44 yards, and Noah Bennee of Holladay, Utah, who caught three passes for 43 yards.
The Aggies’ defense was relentless, sacking Weber State quarterbacks four times and consistently disrupting the Wildcats’ offensive flow. The result defied the pregame spread, which had installed Weber State as a 15.5-point underdog, and the total score of 46 fell well under the over/under line of 64.5.
UC Davis opens Big Sky Conference play next Saturday on the road against Cal Poly. Weber State has a bye week before hosting Sacramento State on Oct. 11.
