Memphis Routs Florida Atlantic Behind Explosive Fourth Quarter

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Interstat) — On a humid Saturday night at Flagler Credit Union Stadium, the Memphis Tigers turned a tense American Athletic Conference road test into a fourth-quarter laugher, exploding for 31 points in the final period to rout the Florida Atlantic Owls 55 to 26.

The game, played on September 27, 2025, was a tale of two halves, and ultimately, a showcase for Memphis quarterback Brendon Lewis. The senior from Melissa, Texas, was a dual-threat dynamo, accounting for four touchdowns and leading a Tigers offense that broke the game open when it mattered most.

Memphis, now 4-0 for the season, saw its national ranking validated, while Florida Atlantic fell to 1-2.

The first half was a tightly contested affair that defied pregame expectations. Memphis struck first, capping an efficient opening drive with an 18-yard touchdown scramble by Lewis. The Owls responded with a methodical 15-play, 75-yard march, culminating in a 1-yard touchdown plunge by quarterback Caden Veltkamp to tie the game.

After a Gianni Spetic 52-yard field goal put Memphis back in front, Florida Atlantic took control of the second quarter. The Owls engineered another long drive, but it stalled at the Memphis 5-yard line, leading to a 10-yard touchdown run by receiver Jayshon Platt on an end-around. A failed two-point conversion kept the Owls’ lead at 13 to 10.

The Owls extended their lead to 16 to 10 with a 27-yard Garrison Smith field goal late in the half. Memphis, however, answered with a masterful two-minute drill. Lewis drove the Tigers 82 yards in just over two minutes, with Greg Desrosiers Jr. pounding it in from 2 yards out with 15 seconds left to give Memphis a 17 to 16 halftime lead.

The third quarter was a defensive struggle. The only score came from Memphis, but it was a back-breaker. On the first play of a drive pinned at their own 2-yard line, Desrosiers Jr. found a seam and raced 90 yards for a touchdown, the longest play from scrimmage in the game, to extend the Tigers’ lead to 24 to 16. Florida Atlantic managed only a 29-yard Smith field goal in response, making it 24 to 19 heading into the fourth quarter.

Then the floodgates opened.

The Memphis offense, which had been efficient but not explosive through three quarters, suddenly became unstoppable. Lewis connected with Cortez Braham Jr. for an 18-yard touchdown strike just 10 seconds into the fourth quarter. After Florida Atlantic’s Xavier Terrell answered with a 1-yard touchdown run to pull the Owls within 31 to 26, Lewis and Braham Jr. connected again, this time on a 73-yard catch-and-run that silenced the home crowd.

From there, the Tigers poured it on. A Spetic 25-yard field goal was followed by another 1-yard touchdown run from Desrosiers Jr., set up by a Florida Atlantic fumble on the ensuing kickoff. Lewis then put an exclamation point on the night with a 15-yard touchdown run to complete the scoring.

Lewis finished an efficient 13 of 19 for 196 yards and two touchdowns through the air, while adding 60 yards and two more scores on the ground. Desrosiers Jr. was the workhorse, racking up 172 rushing yards and two touchdowns, with his 90-yard scamper being the definitive momentum-shifter.

For Florida Atlantic, quarterback Caden Veltkamp of Bowling Green, Kentucky, put up valiant numbers in a losing effort, completing 31 of 50 passes for 318 yards and a touchdown, while also leading the team with 28 rushing yards and a score. His primary targets were Easton Messer, who caught nine passes for 131 yards, and Jayshon Platt, who had nine receptions for 101 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, the Tigers were led by DeMarco Ward and Everett Roussaw Jr., who each recorded nine tackles. For the Owls, linebacker Leon Hart Jr. of Miami was a force, registering a game-high 11 tackles, including a sack.

The final score was a stark contrast to the pregame projections. Interstat’s game simulator had projected a narrow Florida Atlantic victory, 33 to 31, and the Owls had been installed as 14.5-point favorites. The combined point total of 81 also sailed over the over/under line of 62.5.

Memphis will look to maintain its perfect record when it returns home to host Tulsa on October 4. Florida Atlantic, seeking to get back to .500, will hit the road to face Rice on the same date.
