Vanderbilt Remains Unbeaten Behind Pavia’s Five Touchdowns, Outlasts Utah State

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (Interstat) — In a game that defied pregame projections and statistical probability, the Vanderbilt Commodores remained undefeated Saturday by outgunning the Utah State Aggies 55 to 35 in a nonconference shootout at FirstBank Stadium.

A crowd of 33,688 witnessed a stunning offensive display from Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, who dismantled the Aggies’ defense with his arm and his legs. The senior from Albuquerque, New Mexico, completed 26 of 34 passes for 321 yards and five touchdowns while adding 79 rushing yards and another score on nine carries.

The final score was not indicative of the game’s competitive nature for three quarters, as the two teams traded blows in a contest that was projected to be a low-scoring affair. Interstat’s game simulator had predicted a narrow 29-28 Vanderbilt victory, while its ELO system gave the Commodores a 93.5% chance to win. The Aggies had been installed as 23.5-point underdogs, and the combined 90 points soared over an over/under line set at 57.5.

Utah State struck first, capitalizing on an efficient opening drive. Quarterback Bryson Barnes, who started the game, engineered a methodical march downfield, capping it with an 18-yard touchdown pass to Miles Davis. Barnes showcased his dual-threat ability on the drive, mixing timely passes with key runs.

Vanderbilt responded immediately, with Pavia answering Barnes’ score with one of his own. He finished a drive with a 21-yard touchdown strike to Junior Sherrill, knotting the game at 7-7 late in the first quarter.

The second quarter turned into a track meet, with the teams combining for 38 points. Utah State reclaimed the lead when Barnes connected with tight end Josh Sterzer on a 10-yard touchdown pass. But Pavia and the Commodores’ offense found another gear. Pavia scored on a 6-yard run, then hit Sherrill for two more touchdown passes of 18 yards each, the latter coming with just 1:20 left in the half, giving Vanderbilt a 28-21 advantage.

Barnes, however, led a brilliant two-minute drill. He completed passes of 19 yards to Braden Pegan and 24 yards to Javen Jacobs to set up a 9-yard touchdown pass to Pegan with 15 seconds remaining, tying the game at 28-28.

The half was not over. Pavia scrambled for a 33-yard gain to set up a 46-yard field goal by Brock Taylor as time expired, sending Vanderbilt into the locker room with a 31-28 lead and all the momentum.

The Commodores seized control in the third quarter, shutting out the Aggies while adding 17 points. Pavia continued his masterful performance, finding a new favorite target in tight end Eli Stowers for a 10-yard touchdown. After a Utah State fumble on a bizarre punt play, Vanderbilt added a 31-yard field goal from Taylor. Pavia then delivered the dagger, a 53-yard touchdown bomb to Richie Hoskins that extended the lead to 48-28.

Utah State turned to backup quarterback Jacob Conover in the fourth quarter. Conover, from Chandler, Arizona, provided a spark, leading a drive that ended with a 14-yard touchdown pass to Brady Boyd to cut the deficit to 48-35.

Any hope of a miraculous comeback was extinguished when Vanderbilt running back Makhilyn Young broke free for a 15-yard touchdown run with 5:21 left, pushing the lead back to 55-35. Conover led one final scoring drive, connecting with Jacobs for a 6-yard touchdown as time wound down, accounting for the final margin.

While Pavia was the story of the game, Utah State’s defense was led by linebackers John Miller and Noah Avinger, who each recorded 12 tackles. Miller added a sack, and Avinger snagged an interception. For Vanderbilt, the defensive effort was a collective one, with Marlen Sewell posting a team-high seven tackles and lineman Linus Zunk from Berlin, Germany, notching two sacks.

Barnes finished his day 15 of 22 for 161 yards and three touchdowns, adding 48 rushing yards. Conover was 11 of 14 for 92 yards and two scores in relief. Broc Lane was a bright spot for the Aggies, catching seven passes for 98 yards.

With the victory, Vanderbilt improves to 4-0 on the season. The Commodores open Southeastern Conference play next Saturday with a daunting trip to face Alabama. Utah State falls to 3-1 and will have a bye week before traveling to face Hawaii on Oct. 11.
