Fordham at Colgate
HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — Colgate erupted for 30 unanswered points after an early deficit to secure its first win of the season, defeating Fordham 44-21 in a nonconference football game Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.
The Raiders’ offense, led by a potent two-quarterback system, found its rhythm after a shaky start that saw the visiting Rams jump out to a surprising 21-7 lead in the first quarter. From there, Colgate’s defense stiffened and its offense proved unstoppable, scoring 16 points in the second quarter and adding seven in each of the third and fourth quarters to pull away decisively.
Fordham struck first with a quick, explosive drive. Quarterback Gunnar Smith, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior from Lake Mary, Florida, connected with Jabril Carter on a 39-yard touchdown pass to cap the opening possession. Smith then engineered another long drive, finishing it with a 5-yard scoring pass to Jack Freeburg to extend the Rams’ lead.
Colgate responded immediately to the early challenge. On the Raiders’ next play from scrimmage, quarterback Zach Osborne found Winston Moore for a 78-yard touchdown pass. Osborne, a 6-2, 220-pound sophomore from Carmel, Indiana, then led a methodical answering drive that was capped by a 4-yard touchdown run from Danny Shaban, knotting the score at 14-14 late in the first quarter.
The Raiders took their first lead early in the second quarter on a 4-yard touchdown run by Osborne. A failed two-point conversion attempt left the score at 20-14. Colgate extended its lead just before halftime. A 36-yard run by Cole Fulton set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Osborne to Reed Swanson, giving the Raiders a 30-21 advantage at the intermission after a Luke Vogeler field goal earlier in the quarter.
The second half belonged entirely to Colgate. The Raiders’ defense, which recorded three sacks and an interception by linebacker Zach Jones, shut down the Fordham attack. Colgate’s offense, now directed by quarterback Jake Stearney, sealed the victory. Stearney, a 6-3, 190-pound freshman from Chicago, scrambled for a 5-yard touchdown in the third quarter and then hit Treyvhon Saunders on a 35-yard scoring strike in the fourth to complete the rout.
Osborne finished an efficient 13 of 17 passing for 219 yards and two touchdowns, adding 45 yards and another score on the ground. Stearney was 9 of 16 for 112 yards and a touchdown, while also rushing for 28 yards and a score. Fulton was the workhorse on the ground, rushing for 97 yards on 16 carries. Saunders was the leading receiver with 9 catches for 126 yards and a touchdown, while Moore’s two catches went for 126 yards and a score.
For Fordham, Smith completed 24 of 42 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns but was under constant pressure. Freeburg was his top target, catching seven passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.
The victory improves Colgate’s record to 1-3, while Fordham remains winless at 0-4. Colgate travels to face Cornell on Oct. 4. Fordham returns home to host Holy Cross on Sept. 27.
