Fordham at Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. (Interstat) — In a game that began as an offensive shootout and ended as a decisive victory, the Colgate Raiders overpowered the Fordham Rams 44-21 on Saturday at Andy Kerr Stadium.

The Raiders, who entered the game winless, erupted for 30 unanswered points after the first quarter to secure their first victory of the season and drop Fordham to 0-4. The game was a stark contrast of halves, with a combined 35 points scored in a frantic first quarter before Colgate’s defense stiffened and its ground game took control.

Fordham’s offense came out firing, scoring on its first two possessions. Quarterback Gunnar Smith, a 6-foot-5, 210-pound junior from Lake Mary, Fla., connected with Jabril Carter on a 39-yard touchdown pass and later found Jack Freeburg for a 5-yard score to give the Rams a surprising 14-0 lead just over four minutes into the contest.

Colgate (1-3) responded immediately and emphatically. On the Raiders’ first offensive play following the second touchdown, quarterback Zach Osborne found a streaking Winston Moore for a 78-yard touchdown pass, cutting the deficit in half.

After forcing a Fordham punt, the Raiders engineered another scoring drive, capped by an 4-yard touchdown run from Danny Shaban to knot the game at 14. The Rams, however, had one more answer. Smith masterfully led a 13-play, 73-yard drive, culminating in another touchdown pass to Freeburg, this one from 24 yards out, to reclaim a 21-14 lead at the end of a wild first quarter.

The second quarter belonged entirely to Colgate as the Raiders’ defense began to solve Smith and the Fordham attack. Colgate took its first lead of the game early in the period when Osborne capped a drive with a 4-yard touchdown run. The two-point conversion attempt failed, leaving the Raiders with a slim 20-21 advantage.

Colgate extended its lead later in the quarter with a 25-yard field goal from Luke Vogeler. After Fordham’s next drive stalled, the Raiders put together a devastating two-minute drill. A 36-yard run by Cole Fulton set up a 13-yard touchdown pass from Osborne to Reed Swanson, sending Colgate into the halftime break with a 30-21 lead.

Any hope of a Fordham comeback was extinguished in the second half as the Rams’ offense sputtered. Colgate’s defense, led by linebacker Zach Jones who recorded a key interception, consistently pressured Smith, sacking him four times.

The Raiders, meanwhile, turned to a powerful rushing attack and a change at quarterback to seal the victory. Jake Stearney relieved Osborne and directed two scoring drives. He punched in a 5-yard touchdown run himself in the third quarter and then connected with Treyvhon Saunders on a 35-yard scoring strike in the fourth to put the game out of reach.

Osborne finished an efficient 13 of 17 for 219 yards and two touchdowns through the air, adding 45 yards and another score on the ground. Stearney was 9 of 16 for 112 yards, one touchdown and one interception, while also contributing 28 rushing yards. The ground game was anchored by Cole Fulton, who gashed the Fordham defense for 97 yards on 16 carries.

Winston Moore was the big-play threat for Colgate, hauling in four catches for 126 yards and a touchdown. Treyvhon Saunders led all receivers with nine catches for 126 yards and a score.

For Fordham, Smith completed 24 of 42 passes for 213 yards and three touchdowns but was unable to sustain drives after the first quarter. Jack Freeburg was his primary target, catching seven passes for 57 yards and two touchdowns.

The loss extends a difficult start for the Rams, who have been outscored 174-77 through four games. They will look for their first win next Saturday when they host Holy Cross. Colgate, now with momentum, travels to face Cornell on Oct. 4.
