Southeastern Louisiana at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a dominant display of offensive firepower, the LSU Tigers remained undefeated with a 56-10 victory over the visiting Southeastern Louisiana Lions on Saturday night before a crowd of 102,219 at Tiger Stadium.

The Tigers, improving to 4-0, erupted for 28 points in the second quarter to turn a competitive game into a rout, overwhelming their in-state FCS opponent. The Lions fell to 2-2.

LSU quarterback Garrett Nussmeier of Lake Charles, La., was surgical in the first half, completing 25 of 31 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns before giving way to the backups. His primary target was Barion Brown of Nashville, Tenn., who caught five passes for 54 yards, including a 17-yard touchdown. Nussmeier also rushed for a 1-yard score in the first quarter to open the floodgates.

The Tigers’ ground game was equally effective, with Ju’Juan Johnson punching in three short rushing touchdowns, two of which came during the second-quarter explosion that gave LSU a 35-7 halftime lead.

Southeastern Louisiana’s offense, led by quarterback Carson Camp of Bloomington, Ill., found little room to operate against a stout LSU defense. Camp finished 8 of 13 for 87 yards and a 14-yard touchdown pass to Deantre Jackson in the third quarter, which accounted for the Lions’ only touchdown. Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez added a 37-yard field goal in the fourth quarter for the Lions’ final points.

The LSU defense was relentless, recording four sacks. Damien Shanklin of Indianapolis stood out with two sacks, while Dylan Carpenter of Saint Amant, La., added another. The unit held the Lions in check for most of the contest, allowing just 10 points despite the lopsided time of possession.

Backup quarterbacks Michael Van Buren Jr. of Bowie, Md., and Bauer Sharp of Dothan, Ala., also found the end zone for LSU. Van Buren Jr. rushed for a 1-yard touchdown and connected with Kyle Parker of Allen, Texas, on a 27-yard scoring pass in the fourth quarter. Sharp, who also plays tight end, caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier in the third quarter.

For Southeastern Louisiana, linebacker Ian Conerly-Goodly of Covington, La., led all defenders with seven total tackles.

The final score of 66 combined points fell under the betting over/under line of 60.5. LSU, which had been installed as a 49.5-point favorite, covered the spread. The result was closely in line with the projection from Interstat’s game simulator, which had predicted a 38-10 LSU victory.

LSU begins a tough stretch of its Southeastern Conference schedule next Saturday when it travels to face Ole Miss. Southeastern Louisiana returns home to face UT Rio Grande Valley.
