Southeastern Louisiana at LSU

BATON ROUGE, La. (Interstat) — In a dominant display of offensive firepower, the fourth-ranked LSU Tigers remained undefeated, overwhelming the in-state FCS Southeastern Louisiana Lions 56-10 before a crowd of 102,219 at Tiger Stadium on Saturday night.

The game, a classic mismatch between a national powerhouse and a regional foe, unfolded as expected, with LSU’s depth and talent proving far too much for the Lions to handle. The Tigers improved to 4-0 on the young season, while Southeastern Louisiana evened its record at 2-2.

LSU’s starting quarterback, Garrett Nussmeier of Lake Charles, La., was surgical in his execution, efficiently guiding the Tigers to a commanding first-half lead before taking a seat. Nussmeier completed 25 of 31 passes for 273 yards and three touchdowns, adding another score on the ground with a 1-yard plunge in the first quarter that opened the floodgates.

That initial touchdown, which tied the game after a sluggish start, seemed to awaken the Tigers. They erupted for 28 points in a decisive second quarter, turning a competitive contest into a rout before halftime.

Nussmeier connected with star receiver Barion Brown of Nashville, Tenn., on a 17-yard touchdown strike, and later found Zavion Thomas of Woodmere, La., for a 9-yard score with just 15 seconds remaining in the half to cap the explosive period. Brown finished with five catches for 54 yards and the touchdown, while Thomas was a versatile weapon, contributing as a runner, receiver, and return specialist, scoring once.

The ground game was equally potent, led by quarterback-turned-receiver Bauer Sharp of Dothan, Ala., who caught a 23-yard touchdown pass from Nussmeier in the third quarter. Sharp, a formidable athlete at 6-foot-5, 220 pounds, was a frequent target, hauling in five passes for 73 yards.

With the outcome secured, backup quarterback Michael Van Buren Jr. of Bowie, Md., took over and continued the offensive onslaught. Van Buren was nearly perfect, completing 10 of 12 passes for 122 yards and a touchdown—a 27-yard connection with Kyle Parker of Allen, Texas. Van Buren also added a 1-yard rushing touchdown of his own in the fourth quarter.

Defensively, LSU was stifling, limiting the Lions to just 10 points. The Tigers’ defensive front applied constant pressure, sacking Southeastern Louisiana quarterbacks four times. Damien Shanklin of Indianapolis stood out with two sacks, while Dylan Carpenter of Saint Amant, La., added another.

Southeastern Louisiana’s offense, led by quarterbacks Carson Camp of Bloomington, Ill., and Kyle Lowe of Collierville, Tenn., found moments of success but struggled to sustain drives against LSU’s swarming defense. Camp connected with Deantre Jackson on a 14-yard touchdown pass in the third quarter for the Lions’ only touchdown. Kicker Guillermo Garcia Rodriguez added a 37-yard field goal in the final quarter to account for the rest of the Lions’ scoring.

Calvin Smith Jr. of New Orleans provided a bright spot for the Lions with a 25-yard run in the fourth quarter.

The Tigers’ defense was a collective effort, with linebackers Dashawn Spears and Whit Weeks each recording three tackles. A host of other defenders, including Davhon Keys of Aledo, Texas, A.J. Haulcy of Missouri City, Mo., Gabriel Reliford of Shreveport, La., DJ Pickett of Zephyrhills, Fla., and Javien Toviano of Arlington, Texas, also contributed three tackles apiece.

For the Lions, defensive back Jakyri Jones of Monroe, Ga., led all tacklers with five stops. Defensive back Richard McKneely of Baton Rouge and linebacker Justin Dumas of Laplace, La., each recorded four tackles.

The victory sets up a crucial SEC West showdown for LSU next week as they travel to face Ole Miss. Southeastern Louisiana returns home to face UT Rio Grande Valley in Southland Conference action.
