Boston College vs. Liberty

ATHENS, Ga. (Interstat) — The stakes will be high Sunday when Boston College and Liberty meet in an elimination game at the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, with the winner advancing in the tournament and the loser heading home.

The game is scheduled for the afternoon at Foley Field. The weather forecast calls for partly cloudy skies and temperatures in the mid-70s.

Liberty (42-20) enters as the higher seed and the home team after taking the first meeting between the two clubs Friday, a 4-3 victory over Boston College. The Flames are coming off a 6-2 loss to Georgia on Saturday, a game in which right-hander Josh Swink worked five innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits with six strikeouts.

Swink (7-3, 3.89 ERA) is expected to start Sunday. He has been inconsistent recently: In his last five outings, Swink pitched seven shutout innings against Middle Tennessee on May 15 but also allowed four earned runs in four innings against Jacksonville State on May 24. For the season, he has 98 strikeouts in 85 innings.

Boston College (37-22) must win to stay alive. The Eagles won their tournament opener Saturday, defeating Long Island 8-4, powered by a strong start from right-hander Tyler Mudd. Mudd threw 7⅓ innings of four-run ball, scattering no hits but issuing four walks while striking out 10. He also hit a batter.

Mudd (6-4, 4.95 ERA) is expected to get the ball Sunday. He has been up and down recently: He allowed two earned runs in 4⅔ innings in a loss to Georgia Tech on May 15 but also gave up three earned runs in two innings against NJIT on May 10. Mudd has 112 strikeouts in 87 innings this season.

The Eagles’ offense struggled Friday against Liberty, managing only three runs. Center fielder Carter Hendrickson went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in Saturday’s win and will be a key bat in the middle of the order.

Liberty’s lineup is led by third baseman Jordan Jaffe, who went 1-for-4 with an RBI against Georgia on Saturday.

The teams have split their two meetings this season, with Liberty winning Friday’s game in Boston. The Interstat game simulator projects a 6-2 Liberty victory.

First pitch is scheduled for 2 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
