Oregon State vs. Yale

EUGENE, Ore. (Interstat) — The Oregon State Beavers and Yale Bulldogs will meet Saturday afternoon in the NCAA Division I Baseball Championship, a playoff game set for 7 p.m. at PK Park.

Oregon State (43-13) enters as the seed in the regional. The Beavers are coming off a 3-2 loss to Washington State on Friday, which snapped a five-game winning streak. Right-hander Ethan Kleinschmit took the loss despite a strong outing, allowing one earned run on two hits over 5 2/3 innings with nine strikeouts.

Kleinschmit, a player to watch for Oregon State, has been a reliable arm in recent weeks. In three starts this month, he has posted a 1.72 ERA with 21 strikeouts across 15 2/3 innings. He held Air Force to one earned run over five innings in a win May 14, then followed with a scoreless five-inning start at Long Beach State on May 8.

Yale (30-14) enters as the regional’s seed. The Bulldogs are coming off a 14-2 loss at Oregon on Friday, a game in which right-hander Jack Ohman allowed five earned runs in 4 2/3 innings despite surrendering no hits. Ohman, a player to watch for Yale, has been inconsistent this month. He had a strong start against Dartmouth on May 8, striking out seven over six innings while allowing three earned runs. He also turned in a scoreless two-inning relief appearance against Brown on May 17.

The Bulldogs have won six of their last eight games overall, including a series sweep of Dartmouth earlier this month and a 12-3 win over Columbia on May 15.

Oregon State’s offense has leaned on timely hitting during its recent run. The Beavers averaged 6.4 runs over their previous 10 games, including an 8-1 win at Long Beach State on May 9 and a 7-4 victory over Air Force on May 14. Yale counters with a lineup that has shown power, including designated hitter Brady RuizWeiss, who homered and drove in two runs in Friday’s loss to Oregon.

The winner of Saturday’s game will advance in the double-elimination regional. The loser will face an elimination game Sunday.
