Levu’s Ninth-Inning Homer Lifts UCLA Past USC

OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Mulivai Levu’s three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted UCLA to a 7-5 victory over Southern California on Saturday at Sapp Fieldhouse in a Big Ten matchup.

The Bruins trailed 5-4 entering the final frame before Levu crushed a pitch to right center, scoring Dean West and pinch-runner Hocking. Levu finished 3-for-5 with a home run and four RBIs. West went 3-for-4 with a two-run homer in the seventh that cut the Trojans’ lead to 5-4.

Southern California built a 5-0 lead by the third on an RBI double and a run-scoring single from Augie Lopez, who drove in two runs. UCLA chipped away with a run in the third on Levu’s single and another in the fourth on a Cadiz single.

The Trojans added two unearned runs in the ninth on a fielder’s choice and a sacrifice fly, but UCLA’s bullpen held. Landon Stump and Zach Strickland combined for 2 2/3 scoreless innings. Michael Barnett allowed three earned runs in 4 2/3 innings.

UCLA improved to 50-6; Southern California fell to 43-15.
