Southern California vs. UCLA
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — The Southern California Trojans and UCLA Bruins will meet Saturday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse in a matchup of two of the nation’s top teams. The Trojans (43-14) come in as the visitors, while the Bruins (49-6) are the designated home team.
UCLA swept a three-game series from Southern California earlier this season, winning 12-4 on April 3, 9-8 on April 4 and 10-4 on April 5 in Los Angeles. The Bruins have won 10 of their last 11 games overall, with their only loss in that span a 8-0 defeat at Washington on May 14.
Southern California enters after a 7-0 shutout of Michigan State on Friday, in which pitcher Mason Edwards tossed four scoreless innings, allowing two hits and striking out six. Edwards has been dominant in his recent outings: He worked six hitless innings with 12 strikeouts in a 2-1 win at Oregon on May 14, threw six innings of four-hit ball with 10 strikeouts against Nevada on May 7, and went seven innings with 13 strikeouts in a 5-1 victory over Rutgers on May 1.
For UCLA, the key arm out of the bullpen is Ian May. On Friday against Purdue, May pitched 2⅓ hitless innings with two strikeouts in a 4-3 victory. He also threw three hitless innings with five strikeouts in a 6-1 win at Washington on May 16. May’s other recent appearances include a third of an inning against Oregon on May 10 and 1⅔ scoreless frames against the Ducks on May 9.
The Bruins’ offense has been prolific all season, averaging more than eight runs per game. UCLA’s pitching staff boasts a team ERA below 3.00. Southern California counters with a balanced lineup and a deep pitching staff that has allowed three or fewer runs in nine of its last 10 games.
Saturday’s game will be the first meeting between the two teams at a neutral site this season. The Trojans will look to snap a three-game losing streak to the Bruins, while UCLA aims to continue its dominance. First pitch is scheduled for the afternoon, with both teams expected to have their top arms available.
Notes: Southern California third baseman Kevin Takeuchi went 2-for-4 with an RBI in Friday’s win. UCLA pitcher Wylan Moss threw 3⅓ innings of one-run ball against Purdue. The game is part of a nonconference slate for both schools before postseason play begins.
