San Francisco vs. Pacific
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Interstat) — Jake Tandy’s walk-off grand slam in the bottom of the ninth inning lifted Pacific to an 8-4 victory over San Francisco on Thursday in the West Coast Conference baseball championship at Scottsdale Stadium.
Tandy, the Tigers’ designated hitter, drove a 1-0 pitch from San Francisco reliever Kai Yovanovich deep over the left-field wall, scoring Chris Davis, Brendan and Jack Orr ahead of him. The blast was Tandy’s sixth home run of the season and gave the Tigers a dramatic win after the Dons had taken a 4-3 lead in the top of the ninth.
Pacific improved to 24-27-1 overall. San Francisco fell to 24-29.
The game featured five lead changes and a tie before the decisive ninth. The Dons struck first in the second inning when Matt Nystrom doubled, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a sacrifice fly from Jackson Harries. Starting pitcher Gauge Lockhart held Pacific hitless through the first inning, but the Tigers broke through in the second. With two outs, Blaine French singled to left-center, driving in Luke MacArthur and Ryan Schnabel to give Pacific a 2-1 lead.
Lockhart allowed four earned runs over five innings, striking out two. He was lifted after giving up a two-run homer to JT Shank in the sixth that put the Tigers ahead 4-2. Shank’s blast, his third of the year, scored Schnabel and capped a rally that began with a Schnabel single.
San Francisco answered in the top of the sixth when first baseman Trevor Harmon homered to deep left, his sixth of the season, cutting the deficit to 4-3. The Dons tied the game in the eighth. Zach Esquivel singled, then catcher Zack Ramppen doubled to left, scoring Esquivel on a throwing error by left fielder French. Ramppen was stranded at third.
In the ninth, San Francisco grabbed its final lead. Isaiah Landry doubled to left and scored on a single to right by Ben Rogers, making it 4-3 Dons. Rogers was left on base as Harmon and Nystrom struck out to end the inning.
Pacific starter Zach Todd worked 6 2/3 innings, allowing two earned runs on five hits with five strikeouts. He left with the game tied 4-4 after the Dons’ eighth-inning rally. Reliever Regan Carter picked up the win, throwing 2 1/3 innings of relief, giving up two runs – one earned – on four hits with three strikeouts.
Tandy finished 2 for 4 with a home run and four RBI. Shank went 1 for 3 with a homer and two RBI. French added a single and two RBI. For the Dons, Ramppen was 2 for 3 with an RBI, and Harmon was 1 for 5 with a home run.
The game was the fourth meeting of the season between the two teams. Pacific took two of three from San Francisco in a regular-season series in April, winning 8-2 and 10-5 before the Dons took the middle game 5-3.
Pacific’s victory in the winner’s bracket moved it a step closer to the WCC tournament title. San Francisco dropped into the elimination bracket.
Interstat’s game simulator had projected a final score of Pacific 5, San Francisco 4. Interstat’s ELO system had given San Francisco a 60.50 percent probability to win.
