San Francisco vs. Pacific

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. (Interstat) — The San Francisco Dons and the Pacific Tigers meet Thursday in the West Coast Conference Baseball Championship at Scottsdale Stadium, with both teams looking to salvage winning seasons.

San Francisco (24-28 overall) enters the single-elimination tournament after a 10-4 win over Santa Clara on Wednesday. Pacific (23-27-1 overall) dropped its regular-season finale 9-5 at Portland on Saturday.

The starting pitchers in this elimination game are a marquee matchup. San Francisco right-hander Gabriel Barrett has been dominant of late. In his past four starts, the Dons ace has allowed two earned runs or fewer three times, including a five-inning, three-hit shutout of Santa Clara on Wednesday with four strikeouts. He also threw 5 2/3 no-hit innings against Saint Mary’s on May 14, striking out seven. However, Barrett was tagged for five earned runs in 2 2/3 innings in his only start against Pacific this season, an April 24 loss.

Pacific counters with left-hander Garret Plata. The Tigers’ staff leader threw six scoreless, no-hit innings against San Francisco on April 26 in an 8-2 victory, striking out five. In his past three starts, Plata has allowed three earned runs or fewer each time, including a seven-strikeout gem against Loyola Marymount on May 3. He struggled with control in a loss to Portland on May 16, allowing three earned runs despite yielding no hits in six innings.

The teams split a three-game series in San Francisco in late April. Pacific won the opener 10-5 on April 24, the Dons rebounded with a 5-3 victory on April 25, and Pacific closed with an 8-2 win on April 26.

San Francisco’s offense is bolstered by catcher Zack Ramppen, who drove in four runs against Santa Clara, and first baseman Trevor Harmon, who homered and drove in three. For Pacific, first baseman Grant MacArthur homered and drove in two runs against Portland, and reliever Matt Ludeman threw a scoreless inning.

The Dons have lost six of their past seven games against current WCC opponents. The Tigers have won three of their past four. First pitch is scheduled for 7 p.m. MST.
