Purdue rolls past Iowa 8‑1 in Big Ten clash
OMAHA, Neb. (Interstat) — Purdue exploded for eight runs in an 8-1 win over Iowa in a Big Ten baseball game Thursday afternoon at Sapp Fieldhouse. The Boilermakers improved to 36-19, while the Hawkeyes fell to 30-23.
Iowa took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the fourth on an unearned run, but Purdue quickly responded. Dylan Drake tripled to right center, scoring CJ Richmond and Jackson Bessette. Westin Boyle then sacrificed in Drake with a fly ball, giving Purdue a 3-1 lead.
The Boilermakers broke the game open with three runs in the sixth. Boyle’s fielder’s choice brought in Richmond, and Alex Manias doubled to left to drive in Boyle and Drake. Jackson Bessette doubled in Sam Flores in the seventh, and Avery Moore’s sacrifice fly in the eighth capped the scoring at 8-1.
Purdue collected 10 hits to Iowa’s six. Richmond and Drake each scored twice. Austin Klug earned the win on the mound, while Iowa’s Cole Moore took the loss. The victory avenged three straight losses to the Hawkeyes from earlier this month. Purdue’s offense was led by Drake, Boyle and Manias.
