George Mason vs. Davidson

TYSONS, Va. (Interstat) — Logan Rumberg pitched seven innings of one-run ball, striking out 11, and Evan Blanchard drove in three runs with a home run as the George Mason Patriots defeated the Davidson Wildcats 9-1 on Thursday evening at Capital One Park.

Rumberg, a right-hander, allowed only one earned run in his seven-inning outing, scattering no hits while issuing one walk and hitting a batter. He struck out the side in the fourth and fifth innings, finishing with 11 strikeouts. It was a bounce-back performance for Rumberg, who had allowed six earned runs over five innings in a loss at Dayton on May 8.

Blanchard put the game out of reach in the eighth inning with a three-run homer to deep left field off Davidson reliever Taggart, scoring Jordan Terilli and Chris Bagnerise. The designated hitter finished 1-for-3 with the homer and three RBIs.

The Patriots (28-25, 14-10 Atlantic 10) jumped ahead in the third inning. Jackson Morse singled, stole second and scored on Owen Clyne’s single to right-center that was compounded by an error by Wildcats left fielder Brett Lietz.

Davidson (25-28, 11-13) answered in the bottom of the third. After Cole Vannoy was hit by a pitch and Nate Daly singled, Lietz singled to left to bring home Vannoy, tying the game 1-1.

George Mason regained the lead in the fifth. Blanchard was hit by a pitch and Brett Vaughan singled. After a sacrifice bunt moved both runners into scoring position, Morse singled to the mound to drive in Blanchard, and Clyne followed with a sacrifice fly to bring home Vaughan for a 3-1 advantage.

Jake Butler extended the lead in the sixth with a solo home run to left field, his first of the night, making it 4-1.

The Patriots added a run in the seventh without a hit. Alex Westley doubled to deep left and advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt. Clyne walked and was caught stealing at second, but Westley scored on the throw home, giving George Mason a 5-1 lead.

Blanchard’s blast in the eighth capped a three-run inning. Terilli had singled and Bagnerise walked before Blanchard cleared the bases. George Mason added another run in the ninth when Morse walked, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a groundout by Tucker Alberti.

Davidson starter Wilson Perkins took the loss, allowing four earned runs on seven hits over five innings with one strikeout. The Wildcats managed six hits, including two from Daly and one each from Edwards, Lietz, Brooks and Diaz. The Wildcats stranded six runners and struck out 14 times.

Owen Stewart, Brandon Hsu and Jake Butler each pitched a scoreless inning of relief for the Patriots, combining for three strikeouts and no hits.

The victory gave George Mason a split of the season series after Davidson had won two of three games at George Mason on April 3-4. The Patriots rebounded from a 19-8 loss to Rhode Island on Wednesday.

The Interstat game simulator had projected a final score of George Mason 8, Davidson 4, and the Interstat ELO system had given the Patriots a 55.30 percent probability of winning.
