George Mason vs. Davidson

George Mason at Davidson

TYSONS, Va. (Interstat) — George Mason visits Davidson on Thursday evening at Capital One Park, with both teams looking to gain momentum late in the regular season. First pitch is set for 6 p.m.

The Patriots enter the game at 27-25 overall after a lopsided 19-8 home loss to Rhode Island on Wednesday. Davidson, which fell 7-4 at VCU on the same day, sits at 25-27.

Davidson holds a 2-1 edge in the season series, having swept a doubleheader from George Mason on April 4 after the Patriots took the opener April 3.

George Mason’s Lucas Alberti has been a consistent offensive threat. The left fielder went 2 for 5 with three RBIs against Rhode Island on Wednesday and is batting .500 (10 for 20) over his past five starts. Alberti has multiple hits in six of his last seven games, including a 3-for-4, one-RBI performance in a 8-7 win over La Salle on May 16.

Davidson will counter with right-hander Cooper Cavanaugh, who allowed three earned runs on zero hits with six strikeouts over 5 2/3 innings in the loss at VCU. The sophomore has been inconsistent but showed his potential on April 25, when he threw six shutout innings with 11 strikeouts in a win at George Washington. Cavanaugh has a 6.75 ERA over his last three starts.

George Mason is coming off a series win over La Salle, taking two of three, and won three of four at Dayton earlier this month. The Patriots have won nine of their last 12 games overall.

Davidson has lost four of its last five and eight of 11 since April 28. The Wildcats’ pitching staff has struggled, allowing at least seven runs in each of their last six games.

The game marks the final regular-season meeting between the Atlantic 10 opponents.
