California vs. Stanford

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (Interstat) — Stanford completed a series sweep of California with an 11-4 victory Tuesday afternoon at Bank of America Stadium, finishing off a three-game set that opened with a pair of one-run losses for the Cardinal.

The game was an Atlantic Coast Conference matchup. Stanford improved to 28-25, while California dropped to 29-26.

Stanford left fielder Jimmy Nati went 3-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in, leading an offense that pounded out 11 hits. Nati’s solo homer in the third inning put Stanford on the board after California had jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the third.

The Golden Bears scored first when first baseman Gannon Snyder doubled to left field, then scored on a single by catcher Hideki Prather. Prather finished 2-for-5 with a solo home run and two RBI. Snyder went 3-for-4.

Stanford starter Toran O’Harran worked three innings, allowing two hits, one earned run and striking out two. The Cardinal bullpen combined for six innings of two-run ball, with Aidan Keenan striking out five over two scoreless innings and Aidan Erspamer, Tyler Reimers, Matthew Steeves and Jacob Peterson closing out the game.

The turning point came in the bottom of the fifth inning. With Stanford trailing 4-3, shortstop Charlie Bates launched a three-run homer to right-center field, scoring Sasaki and MacDonald to give the Cardinal a 6-4 lead. Bates finished 1-for-3 with a home run and three RBI.

California had taken the lead in the top of the fifth when Ethan Kodama walked and scored on a double by Snyder, but the Golden Bears stranded runners on second and third. Stanford’s bullpen then retired nine consecutive California batters from the fifth through the seventh innings.

The Cardinal broke the game open in the sixth with a five-run outburst. Center fielder Jeon doubled, Nati doubled him home, and after a strikeout, a single and a walk loaded the bases. Catcher Tokheim doubled down the left-field line, driving in two runs, and second baseman MacDonald followed with an RBI double to make it 10-4.

Stanford added an unearned run in the seventh when left fielder Schmidt’s fielding error allowed Moran to score from second base.

California got a two-run homer from Kodama in the ninth inning, but it was too late. Kodama finished 1-for-3 with a home run and two RBI.

California starter Otto Espinoza took the loss, allowing three earned runs on no hits over 3 1/3 innings, walking four and striking out four. Ryan Spalliero and Trent Roach each threw a scoreless inning for the Golden Bears.

Stanford outhit California 11-9. The Cardinal used five pitchers, with Keenan, Erspamer and Reimers combining for 5 1/3 innings of one-hit relief.
